Well....since it is Christmas you may take a break from your reading assignment and paint Santa with the holstein for the Tangipahoa Parish Dairymen
Seriously, looks very good!

Yes Ken its Ok to paint those as Long as you don't become a Santa Clause hack and undercut all the other Santa Painters in town.
I really don't want to log into Santaville and Have to read about how your are undercutting all the other Santas since you don't do this fulltime and only doing it for extra spending money.

Ken, Finish the book, then get the printed version of the Sign Pricing Guide. Darn good info for a start up part timer. Then at least you will be making some "Real Good" spending money...without having to worry about being shot off your scaffold. Sign ladies and gents can get a little testy about "price cutters"...

Ken, you can make some serious pocket money with Christmas Cut-outs especially in the quality end of the market. Don't try competing with the cardboard and plastic Made in China stuff.
This dude is 4x4ft, cut out of masonite. Weatherproof as long as you seal the back and edges with good primer. Paint is gloss acrylics and sprayed with high gloss UV Clear. Retailed at $140 plus Tax! A "Set" ... Sleigh, four double reindeer, Rudolf and a string of Xmas lights for reins went for $750.
Best year I had was over $9,000 worth. Didn't do them this year because they are labour intensive and we are busy with "regular" signs. Plus it was eating into my weekends, especially most of Sunday at the local markets.
Here is some other designs. Feel free to use them.
Best of Luck. It's a bit late in the Season tho. I used to start in October. Maybe next year?

Wow! Gail and Devo used to tell us about the fun and money involved in making these decorations. Just between us, there's been a buch of whinning around our house about lack of extra Christmas cash. Between this post and the movie Cinderella Man, I feel inspired. I'm going to go dig out my scroll saw and brushes.

I know that I'm a year late with this reply... but ya get that (grin)
yep Santa was certainly good to Devo and I for a lot of years
since moving north and semi retiring, each year I play with the idea of doing just s few santa's for some extra money
at the time of the year when it just seems to slip through your fingers so bloody quickly who wouldn't
2 years ago I even got a few sheets of masonite in... just incase Devo changed his mind and agreed to let me load myself up with work again
you see it is impossible to just do a "few santa's" they are like chocolate biscuits ... you can't just stop at 1
2 weeks ago I enlisted the help of the youngest son (now aged 17) and after introducing him to my friend Mr Jigsaw explained the secrecy this job required
Like any good conspiritors we waited for the right moment and when his father went away interstate for a few days I got Sam to cut out the 2 designs I most wanted to paint this year
I have conned myself into thinking that I will just paint these 2 for my own home...
the grandkids are coming up for a visit and they need santa to be on display
but I know it is a lie that I am feeding myself
so to anyone who is hooked like I am on christmas cut-outs... maybe we need a 12 step program or something to break the vicious cycle
anyway here a few really bad pics of what I used to do from 1st october right thru to xmas eve ... (inject wistful sigh here)
cheers gail

Whenever I hear someone say they are going to "read" Mastering Layout I think of how it originally came out. It was a monthly newsletter, with layout tips and a font. I didn't "read" Mike Stevens, I lettered along with it, several times, and couldn't wait for the next one. Don't just "read" that book. It wasn't a reference book as much as a "get something out and letter-it" newsletter -- sort of made to follow along. It's the best book out there, but it was a better newsletter.
Those were the days when Mike Stevens' Journal and SignCraft would totally stop production.
my two cents.
