Pricey but so much more character than aluminum. The one I have is a Union, guesses have it built sometime about the 1920s. They've been out of business since the 60s or so.

I think the one that Sal is offering is a winner. It compares to those gerstner's in style, and apparently quality, too.
Plus, not many know this, but it's fact...Sal is known around his household as Santa Claus. And Santa can use all the help he can get this time of year. Nice guy, nice family, great price.

What do you plan on putting in the box? I used to use one like you mentioned for years. It's big and it holds a lot but it's not too user friendly. When mine wore out, I changed over to a two drawer Craftsman tool box. It has a really deep top and two slide out drawers. It's a lot smaller, therefore lighter and I managed to pack dang near everything that was in the old one into it.

That wood kit is real nice. I don't care for the way you have to carry it with 2 hands. It's heavy too. Its the type tool and die maker use. I'm a real signpainter and need to have all the right stuff in one kit. I now use the d-flight aluminum kit. Its big enough to carry all the brushes you need including 24 EZ Pour squeeze bottles of paint. This kit works very well in the shop on the bench ready to close up and go on the job. I own 13 kits. (collect them) My custom made wood kit is for my gold jobs. I has one top handle and made with no excess weight. John

Hey John, lets see some of those kits! I love kits! I have a Gerstner that is about 24" long and 18" high that is for gilding. It is from the 1920s or 1930s... really cool! I have another that is big like the one Sal is selling, but mine is bigger and holds all 40 colors, every kind of brush, tape, airbrush stuff etc... the only things I don't have in there are my thinners. I have another cantilever box with all my window gilding supplies, japans and varnishes and gold! They all weigh a fair amount, the big Oak box is a good box for the shop and in the back of my truck, the Gerstner is my on the road, up stairs and lettering boats etc kit where I can't back my truck up to. It holds about 12 colors plus thinner jars and everything else needed for most of jobs. I guess all one can say is buy a few different ones and see what satisfies your needs...

Rayco has a really nice metal one... ALUMA foldout sign kit, page 31, $137.50. It seems to be a popular one that we see at a lot of meets. AND they are a merchant here, too!

I got a tool box at a garage sale, It was once someones airbrush kit, & besides a few paint stains... it is in excellent shape.
I have tools in it, but just the other day was looking at how it may be a suitable substitute for a sign painters kit. ..but I don't know, since I'm not a sign painter.
I do like to collect tools though... including sign painter tools, & always with the hope that the right combination of inspiration, preparation, curiosity & neccessity will conspire to motivate me into learning at least a little about using many of my unfamiliar tools.
That is just like my Craftsman cantilever kit that has all my paints, gold and varnishes for window gilding. If I find the pics of Peter "GUNN" Cangemmi (Sp)'s kit, which is just like mine, it is an incredible work of art! So, it is a suitable sign kit. I recommend it to anyone looking... It holds lots of paint, thinners, varnishes, brushes of all types and sizes and is secure too. As everyone soon finds out, you will need more than 1 anyway...
