Sheila, yeah my work really comes and goes in waves 'cept that cycle seems to only take 3-4 weeks to complete while each job only takes a couple days at most!
You know how it is, when you're busy there's no time to think about promoting and when things slow down enough to have that time, it still takes a couple weeks for those efforts to kick in.

Mike..I think you just nailed my situation on the head perfectly. (And probably most people's too)
My cycles seem go in about 3 month batches.
I know the all too familiar laments..
"Hey gimme a break I'm working overtime already."
"Ahhh.. some breathing room."
"I'm glad the end of the month bills aren't due for another 2 weeks."
"Oh Crap! It's the end of the month already!"

Mike, You answered your own question. When you're busy, you don't have time or think about marketing yourself. And because of that, business will slow down. When things are slow, you put a lot of your efforts into marketing and a few weeks later, the investment pays off. Right now I'm just worred about getting work and paying the bills. But, once things are up and running somewhat smoothly, I'll be trying to balance my day between paying jobs or billable hours and investing marketing for future business - a task that is a lot easier said than done

Just when I think I'm geting a business call, a glance at the screen shows it's my old friend Unknown Caller at 1-800- etc. Still waiting for one of them to actually leave a message. Usually happens when a run for the phone is called for or I'm in the middle of something.

it doesn't happen much anymore.. but years ago I caught myself reacting to the start of a slowdown, by actually allowing the first seed of worry to begin to take root in my state of mind. I caught this seed early & decided then & there that I would consider it a challenge to ramp up my efforts to complete each & every little job in production as fast as I could, as if to dare fate to leave me with something real to worry about. I figured if I had signs to make, even if it was only one... if I had work, I had NO time to waste worrying (of course finding time to market is another story)
..so anyway, ONCE... years ago I did catch up. It lasted almost 24 hours
Now I never worry about running out of work. I won't say I don't notice slowdowns, & I won't say my thoughts never begin to turn twords concearn... but I always remember my challenge & turn my attention to completing what I already have in front of me. It still works well to get my mind out of fear & back into doing what I love.

I haven't been completely out of work either, always something to work on, but things do get slower than I like from time to time. I've got my dad's "worry gene" that likes to kick in even though in reality things are OK. I think that "gene" has saved my butt in the past.
