Have used Firefox for quite a while now and never had any pop-ups. This is not the case any longer. Also I'm getting an Internet Explorer msg box that says "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close." The box stays on top of any window I'm currently working on and only has a close option. Anyone experience this as well???

Try Ad-Aware SE personal http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ It's free and it will remove some of that junk (those bozos with nothing to do except create pop-ups) on your computer. I've been using Mozilla suite for years and rarely get any pop ups. When I do I just run Ad-Aware and I'm good to go.
