I just watched the nightly news and they had a report on a 737 that has a giant sammon painted on the side to promote the Alaska fishing industry. the cost of painting 1 plane? half a million dollars. now i don't know what the going rate is for painting a 737 but it seem like about 450.000 to much to me. this was paid for by the taxpayers by the way.

In OP's neck of the woods, his competition would have done it for $29.95. Only problem is, the plane would have ended up with a Florida largemouth bass on it.

Lol the paint job was probably only $25,000, but the Unions, FAA, TSA, OSHA, and a whole bunch of other agencies required mountains of paperwork involving bidding, qualificatons, specifications, inspections, etc....thus eating up the other $475,000!
Oh! I forgot...the Ad Agency probably got $150,000 for picking out a pic of the salmon!

No Bobbie, there's no sign painter's union . . .but if a union subs-out some work to an artist, whoever's inviolved feels a strong need to get a kick-back . . . .
Also, my first husband worked for beechcraft years ago. They had hundreds of picky little specs and a ruler which measured to 10,000th of an inch which they had to use to measure every little thing. Even the thickness of a layer of paint had to be to spec. decals had to be applied just so . . . If the painters had to paint a salmon according to those kind of specs . . .it's still too much money . . .
When we were in England, we saw a lot of one airlines planes, each with different awesome tail graphics . . . .wonder if those cost half a mil apiece??

When did the union end? I still have union friends in the Sign and Pictorial Union, Painter's and Decorators. One of my friends has been doing work for a large mall for thirty five years because of his union affiliation.

All I gotta say is "Fish on!" Alaska Airlines is my favorite airline of all. Definately paid too much but what the heck. They could have gotten Guff Sherman down in Soldotna to do an even better job. He did a cutout 24' sockeye on MDO for a bait and tackle place and it was probably less than $3,000. They probably got some pretty boy out of California to do it for the half mil.

Irish, since Arnie has stopped working out I think I could take em. And no I don't use Viagra - since they came out with Cialis, LOL.
The smart thing would have been to host a Letterheads meet and have about 50 of the best darn sign painters in the world come down, work for 40 straight hours totally free, paying all their own expenses and get R done. Oh wait, that's been done already. ...nevermind.

And of course, the real kicker....as noted above, paid for with our tax dollars through the Alaska Fisheries Marketing Board.
Quoted from ADN.com; "A local nonprofit agency, the Alaska Fisheries Marketing Board, gave Alaska Airlines a $500,000 grant to paint the jet. The money came out of about $29 million in federal funding U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska and his congressional colleagues have appropriated to the marketing board, created in 2003, to promote and enhance the value of Alaska seafood. The senator's son, state Sen. Ben Stevens, is chairman of the agency's board of directors."
Beautiful plane, interesting painting job, even more interesting funding...

It seems cronyism and nepotism are alive and well per usual in Washington. This one is right up there with that million dollar plus bridge deal in Alaska that is supposed to go to some island that has about 50 people living on it.
Gotta wonder if John Q Public is ever going to get sick of being fed government fish and pork.

From that Seattle newspaper story that Mark linked to:
quote:The federally funded Alaska Fisheries Marketing Board paid for the rest of the roughly $300,000 project, said Bill Hines, the board's executive director.
The airline is using the remainder of the marketing board's $500,000 grant for bookmarks that will be passed out to passengers as part of an educational campaign about the state of Alaska's fishing industry.
$200,000 spent for bookmarks and you guys are complaining about the painted fish?

I don't think you guys understand something about Alaska and it's fisheries. First of all, for a lot of reasons, they are losing a lot of main salmon spawning beds; when they lose them they never recover - period. There are 5 species of salmon that spawn in Alaska, some of which are really losing ground fast. This has been a great concern for the past few years. Those wacky Japanese (and others) haul in millions of pounds of Alaskan salmon with absolutely no regard for decimating our stocks. About three years ago a U.S. Coast Guard ship shot across the bow of a tender (the mother ship that all the boats bring the catch to) for refusing to leave our waters. Global warming has created flood conditions in many of the rivers in Alaska and the silt has washed over and ruined a lot of the spawning grounds. If money was not pumped into this by the federal government then in a few years there would be no salmon - and never would be again. That's just the tip of the iceberg also; salmon is the primary food source of bears and a lot of other creatures rely on them. Even when they die, their rotting carcass' provide incredible neutrients for the surrounding area, providing the local flora and fauna with the necessary fuel to last thru the winter. Most of the indigenous peoples of the Alaskan interior depend on "dog salmon" to keep their sled dogs in high grade protein throughout the year. It can not be overstated that salmon is a key resource in Alaska and must be protected at all costs.

It's not about bookmarks Don; it's about education so we don't lose something non-replacable. I thought you were the eco sensitive type. What are we going to eat when there are no more salmon?
