So,,, have any of you sign ladies had to deal with jealous women, A while back, about 92', I got a call on my anserwing machine from some woman. She had a Mexican accent. She called me all kinds of names, Puta, etc. Said I was doing more than just working on guys trucks, etc. Funny, but I have never dated any of my customers when I was single. NEVER DATE THE CUSTOMER!! Then you lose a customer. Once I got a call from a woman who wanted to know why my business card was on her boyfriend's corvette. I asked her if he was a truck driver. She said "Yes'. So I told her I did truck lettering, and he had probly asked one of his friends for a card. Then she said "oh'. Besides, I would never go out with a guy who owns a corvette. Cause we all know about guys who drive corvettes. But, I was just wondering if any women out there ever had any experiences like that.

Alicia,

the only thing I can think of was the competition of the artwork for the signs. It seemed that many "better halves" had to be the "artiste". It was some kind of ego thing, and still is, and it wouldn't be bad but, when the artwork was not a good thing for an exterior sign, plus the fact of bad spacing, layout, colors, design, and so forth, it was difficult to convince the hubby or wife that my idea would be better.
I steer clear of these wifes designing, and felt many times that I was just the "worker" that didn't matter at all, just like a maid or something that could do the "dirty work". Since the customer won't be happy in the end, it was usually a lost cause unless I could knock some sense into them. Most of the time, I couldn't as the wifey wouldn't budge, and the hubbies someties didn't want to deal with it, although later they may or may not have realized I was correct in my deductions. Some signs I just wouldn't do, and there were a few that were rather bland or redone in the end. But, I had to support my family so, yes, I gave in sometimes, and made some minor changes as I took charge in different degrees, depending on how much I felt I could deal with in the end.

Unfortunately, I did give in recently, and the orange letters on white is almost invisible as the red on white the husband and I wanted didn't happen. He kept saying, "but, you don't have to live with her!" That is true and I enjoyed my ride to the bank. It wasn't a jealousy thing, it was just that she wanted to match the building, hmmm. They'll probably be back for a repaint in red in a few months. The extra money won't hurt either. [Smile] interesting post, Alicia.

Yes, Alicia, I have.
I once was lettering a tow truck in a garage.
The shop owner's girlfriend, a Wynona Judd clone, was screeching and bitching at him, then she left in a huff.
Turns out that she didn't like me, a woman, working in his garage.
Too frickin bad, Wynona.
...as if I'd go for a guy with 3 teeth....
(Did I mention she is an "artist" ahem)
I hate, make that LOATHE, working for most women.
Especially the Martha Stewart wannabe types like Deb mentions.
What do they say about men with Corvettes?
Love....Jill [Smile]

What about women who come into a "guy" sign shops and hit on them? I've had that happen several times. I had one blonde tell me "Why don't you come over to see me for a few hours one day and not tell Brenda where you're going". I didn't go. Ya see there, women can be pigs too. Glad I drive a Mustang convertible; I always thought those red classic corvette drivin' older guys were a bit on the shady side, wink.

Yeah there used to be a truck customizing shop in town here where the owner's wife worked the front counter while her hubby worked in the back. She had no problems turning on the charm to get her way, plus she was smokin' hot so.... welll.... hook line and sinker.. every damn time... [Wink]

Usually, I don't have problems with the women being jealous.

Biggest problem I have is from men & women who think signmaking is a male profession.

There was this 1 job I did and his skank of a girlfriend had an issue with him talking to me. Of course, he was hitting on me when she wasn't around but I just ignored it. [Wink]

I'm here to tell you a lot of southern women are extra-ordinarily jealous . . . especially if you are single . . .

I've gotten a few phone calls that go. . .

"Hello? I found this number in my husbands stuff, on my boyfreinds caller-ID, (etc, ect,) WHO are you and WHY were you calling??" . . .'
[Roll Eyes]

Now I ALWAYS make sure I add '/SIGNS' . . . but that don't always help. . .

Also have heard the background conversations which go something like:

"This is Sheila Ferrell with the sign shop . . .may I speak to John Doe?"

long pause . . .then, in the background while waiting for him to come to the phone, I hear that insinuatingly accusational voice:

"There's SOME woman named Sheila calling YOU...WHO is SHE?? . . ."

LOL

Ya can't help but feel bad for the guy . . .

I also HATE it when a guy with a suspicious wife by his side comes up and says,
'HEY! I been meanin' to call you . . .about some work . . .'
[Roll Eyes]

Had a guys wife show up real late one night when there was two or three mechanics, and me, workin' to get a race car ready. The wives of the guys I was working with knew me and knew they had nothing to worry about, but there's always other guys standin' around a race car making sure they are consuming acceptable amounts of beer and being as useless as possible. . .
This woman came down there and flat out pointed out HER man to me . . .whom I had barely even noticed was there, but I told her,
"Look, EVEN IF I was after him AND he could be got, then he would'nt be worth a dime to either one of us!!. . ."

(meaning first, I don't go for married men and secondly, who would WANT a guy who screws around anyway? DUH!)

She laughed and identified with that and went home realizing I was'nt the type she obssessed with worry about.

Heck...if you knew some of the psycotic chicks I know . . .
I don't even like to date a guy who just broke up with a girl he went out with for only a few weeks because she might be the kind thinks she's still the main hen . . .you could get shot or attacked or something by a red-neck, man-obssessed woman . . .lol

It's a good question Alicia, because I think we should be business people in all areas and in our behavior. You're right about not dating customers too.

Do I cut-up and flirt and call people hun and sugar and babydoll?? Yes...but I say that to EVERYONE - male and females, kids . . .I don't talk no certain way to a 'taken' man than I would if his ol' lady was standin' there.

I'm glad that 90% of my customers know me and never think anything of it. [Smile]

[Rolling On The Floor] The things you learn on letterville chat. I did not know that.

What does it mean about a man who drives a pink corvette? It was suppost to be that purplish color Ford came out with about 93 but was mixed wrong, lol! He sure got a lot of abuse about that car... especially when he started dating a chick named Barbie. [Wink]

just attend 1 corvette car show......and you will see the "shortcomings" of their owners!!!
all car shows are egocentric, but as to those i prefer..CORVETTES are the last on my list....
1. is the hot rod crowd....lot of good normal people.
2. MOPAR SHOW...great folks own MOPARS!
3. CHEVY SHOW.....this is a mix of fully restored chevys and hot rod chevys...good people.
4. MUSTANG SHOW...
5. FIREBIRD car show....sorta borders the corvette mind set.
6. ANTIQUE CARS...now you start to get some strange people..they all think they are at PEBBLE BEACH.
7. CORVETTES...they all think THEY CREATED PEBBLE BEACH!!!

Corvettes, according to Freud, give their owners a feeling of virility, power, strength and make up for the self-doubt they have always emotionally suffered in terms of them not quite measuring up in terms of "manhood" when comparing themselves to other men. The principle is referred to as "Penis Envy."

You'll often see this principle manifested in young teen males who struggle with doubts about how they compare to their male peers. Thus the popularity of "fast and furious" movies, cars, and the like.

Usually, according to Freud, driving a car with a long extension - gives the man with a large ego, but doubts about his prowess in terms of satisfying the opposite sex, a feeling of superiority by bolstering his self-worth. He feels that his perceived "limitations" have been adjusted in that now he has brought much needed attention to himself by demonstrating his achievement of success over that of "mere" commoners.

It's basically the same crude example of why turkeys puff out their feathers and spread their tails - casting illusionary images to onlooking females in an attempt to gain access to the goodies.

Mostly, you'll see guys that are small in physical stature, or with geeky backgrounds behind the wheel. Every look cast their way gives a temporary charge to their ego - "she looked at me!....I'm sexy, I'm powerful, I could have her."

Then, there are those that sincerely appreciate the beauty of that curvy design, the torque and mechanical attributes and would gladly lay beside that iron maiden in the garage - if only the designers would have placed faux nipples on those retractable headlights!

I must admit...with the exception of a few models...I have enjoyed the visual appeal of the Corvette from an industrial design sort of way....much like I appreciate the look and design of an AR-15....or my my Palm Pilot.

If I had a split-window '63...I would probably not drive it...just sit in the garage on a stool and look at it....getting up occassionally to walk around it and see how the light reflects off the shiney paint from different angles.

You can usually tell which Corvette owners are drawn to those marvellous machines because of their Freudian shortcomings by how they react to ribbing about their ownership.

My guess is that those who get defensive, rather than chuckle, and spend a lot of time trying to defend their manhood when confronted with the Freudian angle probably scramble for their pens when the "Meet Bob" commercials air.

Hehehehehehehe

well i gotta tell ya...i knew this guy who had a maroonish purple vette and he had a schlong down to his knees(or when you say "short comings" are you talking about time wise???) anyhoo....a few of my friends had slept with him thats the only reason i know that btw...i never asked if he(i mean the vette)was a good ride.

oh and to answer the question...sure, there's been a few but once they met me they knew i was happily taken and no threat.

Freud would argue that the guy with the corvette and a schlong down to his knees needlessly suffers from anxiety of "penis envy"......he is simply nearsighted and needs glasses.

He thinks he has shortcomings only because he cannot physically see the "extent" of his misunderstanding.

A good pair of glasses would put him in Cavalier in a hurry.

Either that...or he has an extra X chromosome
- an genetic abhorration when combined with infant breast feeding causes unrestrained growth in one's schlong.

LOL.... [Rolling On The Floor] [Rolling On The Floor] I'm sorry, I can't take it anymore....hahahahaha...you know I'm talking out of my butt!! Hehehehe

Todd, you must have a smart butt if you can train it to talk. [Wink]

Any man that would buy a Vette and let it sit in a garage, is not much of a man! What a shame to have a nice vehicle and let it sit on the sidelines. If it's worth owning it's worth driving, I'd rather enjoy it than worry about resale or collector's value. If it gets scratched it can be fixed. [Smile]

Jealous Southern women???? Shelia, that statement is damn near redundant. [Smile] All joking aside, a jealous person, be they male or female is a mighty dangerous thing. I could go on and on with stories from my past and some of my friends past. Simply put, dealing with a jealous person in any manner is just no fun [Frown]

I called a perspective customer once, that I was TOLD to call, about lettering his pulling tractor. His wife answered & said, "I am his WIFE, & EVERYthing goes through ME FIRST!" Never heard from him after that.

When a couple comes to me about work, I always give the wife lots of attention, too, but I have to admit, when her taste stinks, it is really hard.

And YES, I HATE working for women in general, especially the ones that want the sign to match the building, or like the latest, the shadows had to match the color on her porch steps! UGGGHHHH!!!!!!

Todd was making all that up OP. Have you taken your medication today? I think you might have left it in the glove compartment of your RED CORVETTE, LOL.

I always seem "SEEM" to get stuck in the middle of boat lettering, especially when it's a marred-couple cutomers. I laugh and say, "You have TWO sides on each boat" and I'm happy to charge you for two designs and lettering. And I seemingly 'slip' outta the vice, without scars.

They usually come to terms with each other...or not. Either way. Dealiing with husbands and wives is a rough call.
