Hi guys. I thought I'd do a house sign for my inlaws. What do you think?

Felix..My only comment would be about the kerning of the letters on the main copy. Either open up the kerning on the lower case letters to match the L/y combo or tighten up the L.

You may see what it looks like to not use the same font for "the", and to put it towards the left, overlapping the "L". It just looks stuck in a hole where it's at to me. I'd use a sans serif, probably all caps, for "the".

Again, I wouldn't use a serif for the small name copy, particularly in conjunction with script main copy, and with sandblasting. Serifs are a PITA for small sandblasted letters. Also, I wouldn't outline the those letters. For one reason, the black and the burgandy are too close in value. Another is that leaving them solid will be easier to read.

The "L" loses its legibility by attaching it like it is. It looks almost like a capital S.

I'm wondering if it might look better not having the black outline around the main copy. Instead, maybe a yellow inline to match the yellow fade color. This would unify the letters more, and make them not look so weighed down.

Edited to put up this quicky sketch, mostly to show what I meant about the yellow inline on "Lytles".

That's cool Don. I'll make it happen. Hey what do you think if I were to gild "The Lytles"?

I'm all for gilding ANYTHING, Felix! Particularly when in-laws are involved. LOL

Take another look. I just added a reddish/maroonish outline to the border to make it sink more into the background and pop the copy a little more.

BTW, I'm glad you liked what I did. I was hesitant to suggest so many changes and make myself look like I thought I was some kinda big **** design expert or something. I know full well there's plenty of people on this board that can design me under the table.

I just like tweeking designs...my own included.

Hey Man, I think your work kicks butt.

Hey BTW, could you send me a small version of the CFR shirt design? I'm updating my website. Please use this address: beachcomberprints@yahoo.com.

Thanks, Felix

...Don IS (real) big, and he IS a "design expert". (He's just being humble.)

...Felix, I know it's an L, but that in style could also be read as a G or a weird S. Maybe you could simplify that one letter a bit.

The big curl-e-que on the "L" needs to go - makes it look like the word starts with an "O" - just my 2 cents . . . .

Nice redo Don - other than the fact I hate pink. [Razz] But I'm with Carl on this - I see Olytle, or even Ofytle when I look at it. [I Don t Know]

That's not pink..it's medium magenta. LOL Island colors are different from north pole colors, Kel. [Wink]

Process blue, I think, would work too against that background.

Hey Don, I haven't touched it yet, but I'm not crazy about the pinky magentie color...ie either. What do you think about a cream or sand color?

L.I.B.! This ain't a island sign, boay. This is goin' ta northern Louisiana! "Bout a half an hour from Arkansaw!

I just don't like white, Felix. Do whatever looks good to ya. That image was just to show what a yellow inline would look like instead of outlining everything with black.

What's the difference between cream and sand color? "Safe" neutral colors will always work, but won't give the sign much "pop". Color is our playground. Play! Value is more important than hue, though hue comes a close second.

How the hell did you ever hook up with a Louisiana gal? [Wink]

Oh no no no dude, I meant the pink on the Edward & Vickie. Not the trim. I like the darker trim.

I really appreciate your opinion!
