Howdy all,

Part #1:
We are discussing adding a sandblaster to the mix at our shop. We mainly want to blast HDU and maybe glass. Right now we have someone else blast it for us with mixed results.
What is the best most affordable way to go? What brand? What CFM? What size air compressor? etc?

Part#:
Our shop is in the city. We were thinking of blasting outside and behind the building. The thought right now is to put up a privacy fence and make a collection trough on the ground. How would this work? How far does this sand travel?
There is this crazy rental house behind us with about twelve units in it. Luckily they don't have any cars.

If you are caught sandblasting outdoors in the city you will be made to stop. You need to make a slide through blasting cabinet so you can recover and re use your media, (aluminum oxide or silicon carbide).

There are dozens of posts on this topic. Spend a few minutes in search on the Bullbaord.

Glass blasting is best done around 25 psi, HDU aound 70 to 75. You can blast glass easily with a benchtop siphon feed and a 5 horse compressor. To blast HDU quickly, you need at least 100 cfm which means gas or diesel compressor or electric 3 phase in the 50 hp range.

What Dave said.
When I used to blast at my home in the country, you could see this big cloud of silica dust drift across my pasture towards the neighbors' house over a quarter mile away. Sand would be on the roof of my barn about 40 feet from the blaster.

Your first priority should be a good air supplied respirator. Mine cost around $1200.
