It doesn't matter much if you are moving a hundred miles or a thousand... it's pretty much starting over. Ask me how I know. You do have the knowlege you've gained though and no one can take that away from you.
Before you make the move to Washington State... check out British Columbia... its even prettier.
See you soon up here.

i did a 500 mile move in 1998 from sarasota(in business 12 years, with a client list)to pensacola, where no one even knew me....took 3-4 years to get reestablished.

Yes, I relocated 1200 miles and my business improved immediately because there's more of a market for the type of work I like to do here.
I already had my website up and running generating income and that continued after I relocated, but being in a better market helped spread the word even further.

8 years ago I moved 2 blocks. never again, that was hell!! I had free rent for 4 months while I first started up... but the sweat equity I put into getting that place dialed in made me feel like a displaced hurricane victim when I had to rebuild.
I realize this is not really a relevant experience in terms of most implications of the starting over you will be faced with... but that's what I thought of when I opened this thread. Now I renew my lease whenever I am down to 2 years remaining, so if my landlord ever tries to extort a huge increase, I will have enough time to look into making another move be less painful.

OP took awhile to get restablished because he had to change his name and gain 200 pounds and grow 3 feet of hair so he didn't look like the wanted posters.

When I was first starting out, a well established painter told me it will take 3 years to get known and busy enough to sustain yourself. I just tested that and it is true, I moved to VT from NJ 3 years ago, and am making a name for myself, just in time to move again. I personally like moving and am willing to help most people out by offering my services etc... so it is easy to get a job or if you already know someone, get your foot in the door and start out on your own. Like was posted before, visit there in the winter first.... and see the whole state before you settle into one area. Before I moved here, I researched the shops and locations, I stayed in 5 different areas for 2 days each to scope out the prospects. Though there are some people here that like to spend money to have nice stuff, a majority are poor and do not care.
