I decided to venture down to Weir's Beach where Bike Week is kicking off today and had a situation present itself to me on the way home.
As I was driving along a winding wooded road, I came around a turn to see that several cars had pulled over where a man was found lying. A couple drivers were speaking to him, but he was insistant that he just wanted to go home.
As I asked another motorist what was happening, I was stunned to see that, when two peoople pick the man up and help him to a car, he was bleeding from the forehead and leg. I overheard one person say that they'd seen his truck off of the side of the road about a mile west in a ditch. He'd stumbled the whole way, eventually falling down.
I told another fellow I was taking with that I felt he should not be moved or, at the least, he should be taken to a hospital immediately and to pass word that I was going up the road about a mile to a friend's to call for an ambulance.
After making the call, I went back and was stunned to find that EVERYONE had left the scene. Only the truck remained, still in the ditch.
As the EMS and Fire department vehicles arrived, I explained what had happened and they went for a look at the truck. They immediately found blood on bothe the steering wheel and door handles. The skid marks showed that he'd taken a hell of a ride.
Once the State Police arrived, I told him everything I could about the whole thing and headed home.
What still baffles me is... This man was clearly unable to stand on his own, my guess is that he'd gotten a concussion or was drunk. In either case, he needs help for his injuries, not a ride home!
You hear all these stories about people doing the right thing to help in a situation like this. This was one time where it seemed that everyone was doing the wrong thing.

Hey Ray - this sounds ilke a good story for your local newspaper. It's amazing how many people are uneducated on what to do in an emergency situation. Our fire dept. holds low-cost CPR classes each year for residents (in fact, I organize it each year). This class includes what to do in an emergency. If you are concerned, talk to your fire dept., EMS services, local hospitals, etc. and see if they want to coordinate with the local newspaper to produce an insert each year. Our local paper does a big insert each spring that goes over fire safety (our biggest concern here in the mountains) and addresses other safety "how-to's". Educating the public is always difficult - but if you rally some people together, it would be quite worthwhile - especially since there are so many "sue happy" people in the world. The person who gave that guy a ride home, could easily lose everything he owns in a law suit. Just random thoughts, Bomba-Dear
