I'm doing some .5" Times letters on an "Awards" plaque that was made out of varnished oak plywood. I'm matching what was already there. It has to be paint, they don't want vinyl, it'll get picked off. The problem is I get lots of "bleeding" under the mask due to the grain. I thought I might put down a clear first to seal the mask edges and then the paint. I was thinking of using Frog Juice or 1Shot clear, it needs to dry fast. Will this work? Or make a bigger mess?

This is one of those problems that can be overcome rather nicely.
Not knowing the textur or existing surface condition it's a little subjective, but here's what I'd do.
Once the mask is down, Gerber#2, a quick rub with a light gray scotchbrite pad, a light coat with a can of Bullseye Shellac. A couple minutes later and you can start painting.

Sometimes you can use a standard removable flexible vinyl. I'm not familiar with Grbers but it needs to be supple so you can rub it down in the grooves
