I have a client who would like a sign made from wood with a clear finish, then lettered with vinyl. I have seen others try this with very poor results (letters fall off). The sign will be hung inside a window so needs to be UV stable. What should the wood be finished with to make a long-lasting sign? Thanks! Nicholas

Nicholis, lots of things can help the vinyl "fall off". Some people don't let the paint or clear properly cure (amount of time) before applying film, this results with solvents trying to escape from paint, makeing bubbles in film (de-laminating).
The other thing that occurs, people clean with products that were not designed to pre clean for film application.

i finished off bare wood with spar varnish(sanding between coats)....put matt black vinyl letters on...sticking was no problem...i wouldn't bother putting a clear over the vinyl...why bother. these signs are outside and so far so good.

I also use spar varnish (outside) and polyurethane (inside). The finish should fail before the vinyl. If you want a real durable coat use a two part clear marine finsh.
