I'm working on a flat-painted mdo sign and the background is all latex paint. I'm going to gold leaf some of the fourishes and wonder if I should have a layer of oneshot under the size. The background is dark, so I was thinking of painting with imitation gold first. I'm thinking it will smooth down some of the brushstrokes in the latex and hide any holidays in the gold. (Not that I'll have any of course....bwahhhh) Can I cheat and add the size to the paint?

Hello Suelynn, I would mix enough im. gold into the size so it is almost a solid color. It will level off because of the size, but dry quicker. After you brush it on, set flat and wait till its ready to guild. I learned this trick for "Rick". Enjoy. . . . .John

I've always dusted the background with baby powder to keep the gold from sticking.
I use a nice big soft cosmetic brush. (I also use the same type of brush for removing the loose gold from inscised letters) (two seperate brushes always).
After I dust the background, I blow off the excess with clean, dry, compressed air. It leaves a nice light amount. I size right over the powder.
The baby powder wipes away nicely.
Peace out, Bob
