My son Peter who taught me much of what I practice in terms of safety for me and the crew is getting much braver of late. In the past he always encouraged me to do things in a safer manner, especially as our crew and jobs became larger. He's a wise boy.
Pete came home this weekend and wanted to put up his mother's rooster which I did for the tower. I just laughed at him for I have been up to the top of that structure before and knew just how tall it really is. I also built the rooster out of steel and KNEW exactly how heavy it was too.
But at Peter's insistance we dragged the tall extension ladder out to the front and it was only AFTER I made HIM climb to the top that he finally agreed with me. I gently reminded him of how as we get older we need to get wiser too.
We called the crane truck yesterday. And wouldn't you know it. Peter had to go back into the city just before the truck arrived to hoist the bird to its final home.
My son-in-law Phoenix agreed to hold the ladder for me as I guided it into place and unhooked the chain. He's always been a most helpful lad. While I don't have a great fear of heights, I certainly understand that the higher we get off the ground the closer we get to heaven... literally.
But the rooster went up without a hitch with the help of the big hiab and I managed to unhook it by stepping on that last dreaded rung at the very top of the ladder.
I was glad to get down onto terra firma once again too. I'm happy to say that Janis' heartfelt appreciation for the finished job made the risk well worth the taking. And one more task is stroked off the long, long list of things to do.

Dan ... I gotta get back to BC one day! Fond memories and lots of friends from a frenzy Summer of '75 skydiving in Abbortsford.
Gotta check out your place. Near Harris Lake? Fraser lake was our choice of miday dips to cool off. "Cool Off" ??? Damn lake in middle of summer had 6" of warm water on top and the next 1000ft was almost freezing! Found that out first time I dived in! hahahahaha
Gotta visit Donna with a big bag of "cherry-ripes" We figure she may have been the check-out girl at the supermarket in Mission when I was there ... unreal connection!
As for your install ... the older we get the wiser we get!
Used to dance around on high stuff. Not now. Too many close calls. Value life (what's left) too much. Now, as long as I feel safe ... no problem ... just the parameters have narrowed! And I charge accordingly!
