What would you recommend to a customer for a light weight sign that will be mounted in an unheated horse barn? And Why?

Dibond. Light-weight, durable, great finish.

I don't know what Dibond is, I'll have to look it up, but wouldn't coroplast deteriorate from the changes in temperature and couldn't it be easily damaged?

Wouold Dibond be the same as Alumilite or Alumicore?

Aluminum on one or both sides with a coroplast type centre?

Dibond - Aluminum both sides, solid pvc center. Very thin but highly durable. Our temperatures range from -50 to +95 (OK... those are our extremes), but no problems with the dibond. Drill your holes a little bigger and use washers for installation.

actually the core of DIBOND is not PVC, but denser and morestable polyethylene

.063 or .080 aluminum . . .flat mounted against the wall with or with out a frame..... would'nt get much lighter than .040 if it's really small and mounted flat on the wall...

Unless they wanted a really rustic look which then might consist of planks or sandblasted redwood....

A hanging sign requires a frame either wood or angle iron...would submit a proposal for decorative angle iron frame or scroll bracket for nicer message sign...or plain, stained, or painted treated lumber for a rustic look.

UH! The word 'lightweight' is VERY subjective & depends on the size & look required. . . [Razz]

I consider it 'lightweight if I can carry it alone . . .so that could be up to a framed 4x8x.080 . . . [Razz]

BTW Sam, what's heated or unheated got to do with it??

The local Business Development Centre has sponsored/funded a horse farm and part of their funding is coming from sponsorship signs inside the barn.

They initially wanted coroplast signs, but since these signs are intended to be permanent, I told them I didn't recommend coroplast.

They do not want wood in any shape or form, and their reasons are weight (don't ask me, I don't know why) and durability of the painted surface, since the background must be white.

I suggested Alumilite but since I have never actually used it before I was unsure of how I could convince them to go with that over the coroplast.

I am assuming that the fluctuations in temperature we experience would not make coroplast the ideal choice, and I don't want to recommend something that is going to bow or sag in extreme heat.

It's 4' x 8' sign

I'd also like to avoid recommending something that will result in them spending double the money on a support background.

I'm strickly a vinyl jockey, don't have the talent for the awesome signs some of you produce and although I know my cutter and a good deal about vinyl itself, I'm very much a newbie when it comes to the substrates

A Dibond 4 x 8 against a a wall would be ideal. It's lightweight, smooth, strong, and would resist a decent hit without denting. Between posts or hanging it may need some sort of back support. It's about 1/8" thick.

1/4" Econolite (one sided) or Alumilite (two sided) would be another good lightweight choice. The edge cap trim helps finish it off and covers any sharp edges. It does dent fairly easy due to the hollow flutes, so be careful not to over tighten any mounting bolts. Either of these inside could be mounted between two posts without any other support. Outdoors, I think econolite recommends to be supported on all four sides.
