And then they get Angry over the Seal Hunt? They are going to allow this hunt to take place, and there's already 2 states that allow this? A Hunt? I know that they have to be controlled, but a Hunt? I guess the Chinese restaurants will take advantage. lol

I don't think anyone will be approaching you with a shotgun and asking if you have any cats they can kill in your livingroom....hehehehe.
I think it's a way to get rid of wild cats that roam the countryside killing game animals such as rabbit as well as songbirds people draw in to their feeders.
I for one would welcome this law in Michigan....I had a mangy cat coming around my house a few years back. One night he was hanging on the screen door of my slider, ripping holes in it.
Haven't seen him in a long while....
I hear ferrol (sp?) cats are a big problem/nuisance in Australia.....
Edit: I should mention that there are way too many cats roaming around free. It's funny, you have to get a license for your dog in this county...but not a cat. If dogs should require licenses then cats should require them as well.....

None of this would be happening if the loving owners of free roaming cats would have had them sterilyzed. Its sad but something has to be done.
I've observed this ferral problem first hand. My wood lot used to have several families of turkeys, bob white quail and wood ducks. The turkeys were gone, the quail were gone, and the ducks are thinned. That is until we had 11 ferral cats trapped.
Some are quick to yell and scream about the killing of these poor innocent non native ferral cats who are destroying environments. But they are not yelling and screaming about the damage they are doing to wildlife they prey upon. When some one does start to do something then "oh my we can't let this happen" crowd starts up.
An alternative: Have a law requirement that every single cat or dog allowed outside must be sterilized. No exceptions. Animal outside? Sterilyze it. on steryl animal outside? Fine the owner and make them get the animal done. But no,, the animal lovers would scream "you cannot take away my rights".
You may laugh. But think about it when some dog barks non stop all day, and awakens some poor smuck who works nights. Think about it when that hard working night worker gets less respect than the barking dog when the onwer allows the animal to continue. Thats the mentality.
Living in a migratory route we see the results of what ever happens in the North. There are fewer song birds now than ever before.
We have a real problem down here with non native nutria destroying millions in property. They could have been wiped out years ago but the love the animal group interfered. Now the problem is out of hand so now thousands are being shot and trapped for $4 bux a tail. The ferral cat problem is same problem that should never gotten out of hand.

SI!! You be NICE!! Even though we live 40 miles from town our cats have a really large fenced yard. Its mostly to keep the deer out, but my kitties love being outside. So many people leave their cats out here! Oof!! I'd like to leave them in the middle of Alaska in winter and see how they like it! We can't catch them, and I won't help or watch, but Dad or one of the neighbors has to shoot them. They become wild very fast and if they have litters and become diseased its really bad for the farm cats out here. I hate it, but there's nothing anyone can do. Nobody from town will come out to try to catch them. Oh, well. I try not to think about it.

I'm with Curtis, that these pet animals must be neutered, or ultimately they WILL be shot. However, However, the local people must be able to afford it, or they won't do it.
There was a serious feral-dog problem around my little town in Appalachian Kentucky. According to the archives of the local newspaper, the City Council would occasionally direct the police to shoot stray dogs for a while. I didn't want to make noise and draw attention, so I learned about modern spring-piston air rifles.
One day, a local veterinarian told the county magistrates that people should sterilize their dogs (who, by the way, are not trained, either). And then mocked the macho-sexist attitude of dog-owners who refuse. I asked him how much he charged to fix a male dog. Good Lord! It was a lot more than what vets charge in the city, and totally unrealistic in the hills and hollers that are famous for poverty. So, I wonder if anyone ever tried something different?

Sounds like an inexpensive way to feed my snakes? Before anybody gets too upset, I have a cat that I care about very much. She is fixed and declawed and is not allowed to roam outside.
People need to be more responsible for their pets.

Since I live near the Wisconsin border the story was on the news here quite a bit. Yes it's real and the bill is in the legislature right now. But a statement by the govenor of Wisconsin sounded like he did not want Wisconsin to be known as the state that kills cats and that it would be unlikely that he would sign the bill into law if it did get through the senate & house.
