I was blessed with a no barking dog. I originally got her to bark if someone drove in but she doesn't. No one even knows we HAVE a dog until she greets you at the door all happy go lucky, nevermind the 5 acres we live on that she's suppose to be 'protecting'. LOL!
When I visit with my brother, his yaps all the time at any moving dust particle and it freaks me out to the point of me being startled and wrenching my neck. I wouldn't be a good match for a barking dog so someone was looking out for me.
My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone. Posts: 3129 | From: Tooele, UT | Registered: Mar 2005

Take out your tape recorder and record the dogs at their best from as close as possible. Call the offender at "odd" hours and play them the tape. Or go to their door with the tape at "odd hours" and say, "I wasn't aware if you knew this, but I have to listen to this whenever you aren't home." Be nice! It will probably bug them more than if they can just say, "That loud mouth jerk!" and slam the door in your face.

There used to be a dog next door that barked that way...about 25ft from my bedroom window...ALL NIGHT long, at least two nights a week or more.... in a muddy pen about 5x10 and constantly neglected and no one ever let her out or played with her...just left food and water.
I HATED that they kept her like a prisoner.
I was always talkin' to the people over the fence and tellin them how she barked all night and they said they could'nt hear it right there in their trailer...I asked why they kept the dog that way and they just said that was their son's dog...not theirs... (He is one of those lazy people that REALLY bug me, about 19 yrs old and totally worthless...HE did'nt even feed/water the dog the mom did)
I got on to him many times for imprisoning the dog and also tried to encourage him to let her out and play with her...but he just did'nt 'get it.
That's another case of my total frustration with trying to help lazy people recognize the blatantly obvious....
One night she was continually barking and I got up and got dressed to go over to open her 'cell' and turn her loose for the night but she just quit barkin' that night for some reason.... Not long after that she died.
Very sad to have a dog for NO reason except to house a prisoner...
The animal control people were not interested in doing anything about this dog (nor two other prisoners across the street ignored in the same way) I was here four years that I never saw these dogs let out of their pens for any reason except mabey to get a rabies shot/tag)
Animal Control said as long as the dogs are not running loose, penned on the owner's property, are wearing a current rabies tag, and not very sick or dying, they were not concerned....

Yes yes, combine Grundy's complaint about old ladies and Kissy's gripe about women that must bathe in prefume, doesn't matter if it's good stuff or cheap junk, it's all offensive just the same.
Hey don't get cranky with Americans complaining about gas prices. The UK is what, about the size of Texas? Obviously there's less population in the UK across which to distribute the costs of operating a country, therefore the cost for each person is higher. The US certainly has more collective purchasing power, more means of fundraising and way more people to distribute the costs amongst. I'd bet if comparing percentages of rate increases instead of dollar amounts, they might be closer between the two countries.
By the way, $2.79 x 5 = $13.95, not $10.
On the flipside, Americans kinda screwed themselves. Instead of staying in close-knit communities they spread out which then requires they use a vehicle to commute. On top of that they love their powerful engines, oversized heavy vehicles with all the amenities.
Combine the distances required to get anywhere in this country with the average size of the vehicles on the road today, using a smaller, lighter more efficient vehicle is almost not even an option if you value your safety.
The bitching won't go away until gas prices become so steep it forces the public to demand smaller vehicles and new developments closer to their communities. That has already happened once before here, and it will happen again. The only question is "when?"
I live in a smaller town where seeing mopeds, scooters and even golf carts and ATV's sharing the roads with cars is pretty common. Then again, our speed limits are all 35mph so it's relatively safe.

Yes, I got a little bent out of shape over gas prices here versus those in the UK, too, and how lucky we are that we are "only" at $2.30 or so per gallon.
It is convenient to forget that any economy needs to be stable and predictable--this goes for the prices we pay for goods and services in order to determine what we charge for whatever we do.
OPEC did a real inflationary number on energy importers twice in the 70s. IMHO the US economy never fully recovered from those two events. Prices of everything went up as a result of increased production and transportation costs. Smaller cars did come on the scene for a while, but that didn't last long. Nixon told us to get on with finding alternative energy sources, and we didn't. The public for the most part has a short memory.
So, here we are again on the third go around of increasing energy costs. Big time increases. It isn't so much the increases by themselves, as it is the rate and speed of those increases that is giving us all such fits. More inflationary pressure on everything we use, buy, make and sell, and not just here in the US, but anywhwere that imports energy.
The US is a big country. Mass transit is not always an option. Long distances are the normal thing. Transportation costs have to be figured into everything we do, or it becomes a losing proposition in a hurry.
Heating oil and natural gas and/or propane are part of the equation as well. Not everyone has the luxury---if one can call it that---of having a wood lot, or the means to burn wood. And don't think that the wood cutters haven't increased their prices to those who do burn wood.
'nuff for now.

Kimberly....I truely feel your utter frustration!!!! Try calling the police several times a day...look into just what the barking dog ordenances are, IF any!!
There is a poor lonely puppy behind my Dad's house in CA, whenever I'm down there it's barking all day...I can't tell you how many times I've called anmal control as well as the police, still it starts around 6 am.....
Whenever I've had a problem with a barking dog here in PA, one call...silence!!! God bless the Port Angeles police !!

Kim, buy inexpensive hamburger, high fat kind, make patties with sleeping pills broken up in them or Zanex! let them sleep. other than that I like calling your neighbors, hang the phone out the window! Chris, urine? I missed something but I guess you mean cheap purfume and bathing in it because they don't bath? Ya me too. I hate people that are always late, don't reply to this, my girlfriend is always late...my brother has no concept of time either! I also don't like customers who bring signs/banners back to be relettered to "save money." They do tend to get upset when the cost is ALMOST the same, just a few dollars less. It's all about the time, not the materials in this case. I have one on the table now! They also get upset when you tell them because of the lettering and graphics now, it will look funny with spacing new sentence, they say ok and don't like it when they pickup banner. I've learned not to accept "vague" customers. If he/she is going to be vague about what they want, full prepayment is warranted!

I read these posts, and I am old and bold enough to have understanding comments to almost every one of them.
Just now reading Michael Latham's gripe about the re-lettering to save money, it prompts me to say I think the single most annoying request I get is one of giving a price before I have the specs. It pushes all my buttons, and pulls all my strings at once.
If this happens in my shop, I point to the 4x8 board on the wall with nothing but photos of my work (they even step up and say: "did you do all these really?" / small town, of course they know the signs or vehicles/ and they smile a little when I say, "well, yes, I don't take pictures of the work of my competitors and then hang them up") and I then say to them: each job on this board is a different price. So will yours be. Just share with me what you want, and I will be glad to quote it precisely.
On Ballparking: I say it depends on the park. I am not a person who knows about sports. But those Ball Parks are different and I need to know who's playing.
To realtors (don't get me started about them) I say: I, too, am in the market. I want to buy a house. How much are they now.
Seriously: I won't play a game of tire-kicking for price. You tell me what you need, and I advise you on the best way to get your money's worth. You tell me what you want to achieve, and I will try to help you do that, reasonably, but not without profit so I'll still be here when you need me again.
Everything where the first question is price without qualifying the critical objective that needs to be achieved is a real waste of time and money. This is something I do take time to explain. If the sign does not meet their objective for what it is about, then a cheap price is almost all wasted money. And a few additional minutes explaining the need for my services rather than explaining their lack of money would possibly get them a fine and proper job.
Well...this is about gripes... so I griped.

I was just about to say the same as Stephen about the Gas prices.. However.. After talking to my Wife and her parents who spent 12yrs in Pittsburgh and having many discussions on how I thought things were much cheaper in the US they managed to convince me the grass wasn't always greener...
They told me property tax was much higher in the states...We have a National Health Service in the UK which is Free and although our Gas is about 5 Times the Price our Journeys in General are 5 times shorter than yours.,, I'd still fancy living on your side for a few years..

People who give their work away. Ive got six people in my town now with plotters who are making signs on the side. Two are print shops, one is a screenprint shop, one is a paramedic and the other two are just doing it as a hobby. They routinely give prices on signs that are horribly cheap. Although most of the stuff they do is temporary signs, it does make the customers think all of us should charge that rate.

How about the fool that sits at a light waiting for it to turn a different shade of green. Or, the s.o.b., that when you turn on your signal to change lanes, speeds up to block you Some of the bullsh*t testosterone games that get played out on the interstate are really aggravating. Of course I just love it when some yuppie in a 5 series BMW tries to bluff an ex dirt track racer driving a truck with 400,000 miles on it

George, what about the yuppies who let their little darlings run unattended through the very same WalMart? Grrrrr
Or today, at Lowe's, I needed a piece of plexiglass cut to replace a shower door. They have this big panel cutter in a little booth that won't even HOLD the 72" piece of plexi I needed! With shelves on the sides even!
That'll teach me for going to those Big Box stores!

Since someone else brought up the washroom theme...I have a question:
This has been bugging me since the day I moved to North America.
WHY do they leave a big space between floor and doors/deviders in every single washroom I have visited on this continent??? What genius came up with this standard design?
You sit there and the divider barely covers your butt while you can study your neighbors underwear and hope to God they will not stoop down to pick something off the floor while their pant are down.
What is wrong with full sized doors and deviders that actually touch the floor and give you some sort of privacy? All you need is a knob that turns to "Occupied" on the outside of the door when locked.

You know what it’s like; you’ve just had a horrible accident, both legs broken, both arms broken, your face sawn off and slight whimper escapes your lips as the nurse dabs your skinless torso with iodine. “Come on you great softy”, she says. “There are plenty of people worse off than you – you ought to try having a baby!” So, Lotti, whilst I feel your pain, I hope you won’t be offended if I say “Come on you great softy.”

Rest room 'stalls' are made that way for two reasons: One, just a carry-over from the old days of actually putting a small board between you and your neighbor which eventually grew to a somewhat larger board and actual toilets.(YAY!) Wonder how advanced the concept will be in 2999 . . .
And secondly, in case for some reason you or your kid get locked-in you would be able to crawl out...a remote possibility, but it's probably happened somewhere and so became a law or a 'standard'. But I have'nt seen any quite as 'short' as you described . . . . yet...
Just be thankful it's not like the old days when it was just one small, wooden 'room' with one long 'bench' sporting up to four plate-size holes cut out of it . . .
Talk about 'family time', or 'getting to know your neighbors & co-workers' . . . or 'splinters'~
Not to mention the holes and cracks (lol no pun) in the walls themselves which disallowed total privacy or a refuge from the cold wind.....
Yep. Bathrooms have come a long way...but I seldom touch anything in public restrooms without some sort of paper barrier and eventually I know I will carry my own can of Lysol...
BTW, fella's, the guy with the filthy hands could always walk right back in the rest room, as well as anyone who just sneezed a wad in their hands, or the little kid holding his crotch already slightly pee'd on . . . . Howard Hughes must've had a clue . . . The point is: The outside handle is no cleaner than the inside...
So here's something else to 'bug' you: People who make you think about gross stuff you'd rather not know . . .

Stall walls don't reach to the ground for these reasons, all of which are creative guesses:
1.) You can mop 2 stalls at once - - the stall you're in plus 1/2 the stall to the right, and 1/2 the stall to the left....saving time for the janitor.
2.) If you run out of TP, you can have the guy/gal next to you hand you a spare roll under the wall.
3.) Safety; In case you have a heart attack or pop a blood vessel in your forehead while straining to release that especially over-sized payload......a paramedic can grab you by the ankles and pull you out from under the door.
4.) People can easily see which stalls are occupied by a glimpse of which ones have shoes showing.

Shiela - I think you're missing the point on the bathroom door swinging out upon exit....
Getting a dirty hand coming in is of no consequence....you want to have a clean hand coming out as you :
1.) go to sit down to order food in the restaurant 2.) go about the day.
With the door swinging out....you can avoid the bathroom germs by either kicking it open or bumping it open with your shoulder on the way out....
Grabbing the handle on the way in only gives you a germy hand for the three minutes you're in there....till you wash your hands prior to exiting.

Now your 'splittin' hairs' Todd... and it could still be the one that winds up in your beans from the nasty janitor who passes off your plate from the cook who sweats in the chicken batter, to the waitress who just sneezed on your chicken, as she walked by the little kid who flicked that booger . . .LOL!!! YUK!
(Can ya tell I used to work in the restaurant industry?? I'm surprised I still eat out . . .)
But don't worry about going too far to avoid this germ-infested world 'cause you need to keep up your immunities...
Besides, there's no escaping filth & germs as long as there's all these people around . . .

People using cell phones loudly in a public place (like a restaurant or airport) and you get to hear their whole conversation.
Folks that interupt others in the middle of a story or mid-sentence. That bugs me when it's happening to me, but it also bugs me when it's done to others I'm around too.
One sided conversations where one person talks too much, being totally clueless to whether their audience is even interested or if eyes are glazing over.
When folks borrow stuff, and I have to ask for it back, ... or it's returned dirty and/or broken.
One uppers ... they always have something that'll top whatever you just said.
Folks that want to argue to be right about stupid petty stuff.
People who give advise ... but obviously don't practice what they preach. You know, the folks that tell you how it SHOULD be done.
When you get a "lip service" kind of answer ... instead of the right answer by someone whose clueless but doesn't want to admit it.
Not being able to get thru to a person when your request doesn't match any of the 17 button options on the "EZ express telephone service" of a business.
Paying taxes.
But heck .... life is still good!
