Well a customer comes in and asks about lettering a pick-up. He is in the vinyl siding biz.
He says the truck is his wife's and she is out of town. I ask him if she will be ok with this. (there just married) He tells me he dose not have to ask her, everything will be fine.
We do a door layout. He wants it bigger, so I set up lettering down the whole side of the truck.Including windshield and tailgate.
He loves it. how much? One color would run a little over $450. He says do it! I did it, he paid me. two days later he comes in and says the wife is back and how much to take all the lettering off the truck?
I told him $150 but it would be a couple of days before I could get to it. He went home and I saw the truck that night with no lettering. Guess he was in bigger hot water than I thought.

Wow.
At least he paid you tho, and you handled it the right way.
I can see that this guy will be "whipped" into a dickless wonder in no time flat before he even realizes he's been henpecked.
Even more, this story makes me want to make a shop sign that says "ALL WORK MUST MEET THE FINAL APPROVAL OF YOUR WIFE"
Love....Jill

Good customer calls me up to paint (hand now ,not fantastic plastic-air,outline drop etc.) DJ's HOOKER on his boat transom. job done,he's super happy, very next am he calls, says mark "will e-z off remove the lettering?" as Paul Harvey says...you know the....

Now see??

There's a real man.

Poor guy tries to something wonderful to surprise his wife and it's wrong.

Sadly, too typical.

Then he 'fixes' it.

He has taken full responsiblity in a half a dozen ways there, between you & her!

I can only hope that she appreciates and recognizes it . . .
and never constantly brings it up in a negative way for the rest of their lives at every family function for the next 50 years...

if they last that long . . . . . . .

A vicious cycle is about to begin:

She's probably going to become a 'wino' now, because it's gonna be a while before he tries to do any 'spontaneous surprises' again, and she'll probably whiiiiiiiine about it:
'You NEVER buy me anything!!'

Then this poor young fella will 'hang a LOT of vinyl siding' for a while, mabey even get a second job...and this will accomplish many things for him:
~He will be away from her whining...
~He can make MONEY' to surprise her with (so she can buy her own dang surprises)
~And, the kid is about to learn the meaning of 'backfire' because she'll then whiiiiiiiiiine about him bein' gone/a workaholic all the time . . .

LOL . . .poor dumb kids in love HAD to go and get married without understanding all these 'control' issues. . . [Big Grin] [Razz] [Big Grin]

Excellent example of poor communication. One of the biggest reasons so many marriages fail. What a jerk! The truck was hers, he had it all lettered up without her knowledge...........and now she's ****ed.......gee, wonder why [Roll Eyes]

I'm with George. He had HER truck lettered without her knowledge. WTF? Did he re-arrange her underwear drawer while she was gone too?

Now I wonder 'what's REALLY goin' on' with those two if they're THAT old . . .lol [Big Grin] [Razz]

Funny, I've had the opposite here with a regular customer:

This guy always sent the wife to order. She's easy to please, likes everything I do.

Then he would come to give the final approval - never liked it (not once that I can remember).
Everytime he would stare at the layout for a long time and go: "Hmmm...I don't know...can you move this line up a bit? Hmmmm.....well, the lettering seems a little small, is that the only style you have? etc, etc."
Mind you, he doesn't know anything about design, but always made me correct things to the worse and always let me know he wasn't really pleased with the work but he'd graciously buy it anyway.

I don't need this. He's no longer welcome as a customer.

Wives....

This story is a little morbid, but here goes.

A couple of years ago a doctor comes into my shop looking for a nice blasted sign with gold letters for his house. I complete the sale and go to work. I call him saying the sign is done and you can come by on your way home (he lives just up the road from us) and pick up the sign.
He stops by , sees the sign, loves it, and pays me with a check. So far, so good, eh?
While is is writing out the check, he says: "This is a beautiful sign Jackson..I just hope this will make my wife happy...nothing else seems to make her happy." Now..I am watching him and see his eyes are kinda distant looking, kinda sad. I think nothing of this until a week later I read the newspaper. The headline was "local doctor kills wife with a baseball bat and hatchet!" He then puts her into her car and rolls her down Mt. Pleasant road, trying to make it look like she hit a tree and did all the damage herself. Big news here. It seems that she was continually beating him down verbally and he finally snapped. Extreme rage.

Now, I have considered this for some time and came to two conclusions. First, you never know what goes on behind closed doors. Secondly, sometimes the mind just snaps...the person really doesn't know why...it just comes undone. It seems he did it in front of thier child.

A sad but true story. I think of it often.
