This afternoon I was at a resturant with a bunch of old hand painted/ hand carved, .etc. signs.
there was 1 sign...inside by the waiting room that was about 4x6 and was wood for the resturant (good time charleys in princeton)
it looked like a piece of wood and the letters were carved out...BUT it didnt look like it was done with a router....i know its hard to explain. but the letters were smooth...and raised...and the background was really really grainy, bumpy, like a log, but there were NO SMOOTH router marks on the outlineing of the letters the grain went right up to the edge of the letter(which were leafed etc. ) and the only part that was smooth was the top of the letter . it looked like a giant piece of wood and felt like read wood.
I have NO CLUE how they did that???? it was real wood. and was done by a signmaker named "Paul" maybe in no. NJ?? Im a hotrod type pinstriper so im not up to par on signs (although I appreciate the art more than anything!) but man....... it was the coolest traditional sign i have ever seen, with scroll work, leafing, etc. id imagine it took FOREVER to do and it was perfect. also had an apprentice sign it too but I dont remember than name either!! dang it.
any clue on how they did the letters? maybe hand carved?? it was done in 99 the sign said. I wish i would have remember the guys full name but i didnt even though i stared at it for ever.

so they tape off the letters and sandblast the rest??? it looks like everythign was carved (although there were no "carve" marks only ROUGH wood grain) but the letters...like the carved around the letters almost. or routed everything out but the letters.
dang it...i suck im not a sign maker haha. i wish i had a picture.
That is sand-blasted wood. The 'tape-off' as you described it is done with a rubber mask that resists the sand blasting process. Lots of beautiful sand-blast work, as well as hand-carving and more, shown right here in Letterville.

Rob, I remember that restaurant well but haven't been there in 20 years so I couldn't help you out with a name.

thats my favorite restaurant, I might have to make a trip there this weekend just to find out for you Rob. Its been awhile since I was there, Used to go there weekly for happy hour when I lived in Plainsboro. But then they opened Ruby Tuesdays and I got hooked. Charlies is MUCH better though.

Maybe it was Paul Musgrove from Mt. Holly, my old home town. He moved a few years ago and did quite alot of period stuff for the town and was pretty good from what I saw.

I know that the one up in Hopewell closed down, it was a hole in the wall place. Im not sure which one that was though. I believe Charlies Other brother is still open, its actually listed in Eastampton Twp.

OK I went to Goodtime Charlies Friday night and took this photo for your viewing pleasure.
This sign appears to be sandblasted wood with a sort of man made gold leaf on the main copy, it has the texture of carbon fiber, so I cannot quite understand what it is. The outer border designs and the bottom line of copy seem to be either an epoxy type finish or maybe ceramic??? the artist has his name on the small gold tile to the left of the bottom line of copy and his apprentice has the same tile to the right of that copy. The sign was done by Paul Musgrove from Mount Holly, NJ
Regarding the meal, it was less than acceptable. It appears that perhaps my favorite restaurant has either changed ownership or at least management, nobody in the place looked familiar, and the service SUCKED at best. I got my Entree before being served my salad or my appetizer, I was too hungry to really get ****ed but I'm unhappy with the experience. Its not the place I used to visit at least once a month, and have been going there since they opened. Of course I'm the type to give them another chance since I had so many wonderful meals there in the past. But I dont know when that meal will be.
