I am seriously considering changing our business model so that we are simply a sales/marketing and design company that specializes in custom dimensional signs.

We do a lot of subcontracting now (electric signs, ADA signs, monument signs, etc.) and have always done our custom shaped MDO, HDU, carved, sandblasted, vinyl signs, etc. in our shop.

I think I make more money on the stuff we sub out than the stuff we do in house, so I was thinking maybe we should sub out everything.

I am looking for a shop that would want to partner with me to make all of our signs and then ship them to us. We would provide the artwork.

Anyone know of anyone that would be interested in provided us with high quality signs at wholesale prices?

Look North Richard. Right across Lake Erie. There are several sign companies in my area that have found their fortune by selling into the U.S. A combination of local Southern Ontario labour rates and a discounting of the Canadian dollar makes our signs look cheap in US dollars.

My shop, like yours, farms a lot of our work out. I would not be interested in a exporting adventure of this type. However if you are serious I could put you in touch with some Southern Ontario based firms that would be.

Give me a call if you would like to discuss it further.

I did just the opposite. I bought the business, that was basically set up as a broker. I realized that to make any real money, I had to do most of the larger sign jobs in house. By controling production, labor costs and quality I became much more profitable. I still sub out some work (electrical, sandblasted, ADA) but not much.
