Here is a photo of a building I need to make and install a banner on for a customer. This shot is taken from the side of the highway where the most exposure will be. The shot to scale would be a 24' x 10' banner. For scale, you can see the vertical seams in the concrete walls, each segment is 8' wide.

Basically, I am trying to decide the best place for the banner and mounting method. I had thought about putting a big banner between the posts, which are 30' apart, but I really don't want to deal with the problems that arise from the wind load. Another thought had been to put a series of U-channel posts in the ground just on the other side of the fence and install the banner on those, so it is closer to the highway and doesn't require a hydraulic lift or drilling 30 holes into concrete.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!!!!
Tyler

Can you hang it with the top of the banner at the top edge of the roof, making it easier to install from the roof top. And, if you could move it to the front of the building, you could use the poles to secure the bottom corners with bungees,etc...

Will they allow fasteners in the concrete wall?
If not Iw ould use the poles for fastening. I would have a mesh banner printed and use some stainless bands to make fasten points on the poles. No wind load and no holes in the building.

Thanks for the input. I like the idea of mounting it from the rooftop and then securing the bottom corners to the poles.. thinking about it though, I would still need more mounting points along the bottom, with a banner around 30' long, the wind would get up under there and tear it apart.

My original idea had been using stainless bands to secure it to the poles, however, I hadn't thought of the mesh banner idea.

Does anyone have a source for a large format strong mesh banner at a reasonable price?

You don't say if the banner will be temporary or permanent.

Temporary ... I would hang it between the posts as you first thought. For "bungees" we use 8" rubber rings that can be purchased from any Plumbing supply or hardware store. They are used to seal joints in storm water pipes. One (or preferably two) on each corner of the banner will allow it to flex under wind load and spill the pressure out. We have used this method to install very large banners that have withstood many storms.

Permanent ... This a large banner we recently installed on a concrete wall. Took two of us just over an hour on site.

We used "sail-track" aluminium extrusions with a thin rope sewn into the 4 edges of the banner. As the name suggests it works like the track on a yacht mast. It has an inch wide flange you can drill thru and into the wall.

Fix the top track to the wall using nylon fasteners every 2 ft. Slide in the banner. Slide on the bottom track and fix to the wall pulling tension on the banner. Repeat for both ends. Hey Presto! Not a wrinkle in sight!

No we did not do the lower banner. I would have installed that using the rubber ring bungees.

there are already roof support posts there. Use them for the banner attachments. USe bungi cords on one end to obsorb wind shock. USe some more cords to stabalize it via the roof..

Thanks for all the good ideas, guys. I am awaiting a quote from my banner supplier for a mesh banner, 30' x 12', printed black lettering, yellow background. My thoughts for the install is to go between the posts, using steel cable run top and bottom held with stainless strapping. This will be fed through the grommets on top. I will also use a stainless band vertically centered to the banner, and will tension the sides to keep it from bunching up. Perhaps I will use the big rubber rings that Jon mentioned for this. One question, if they are seamless rubber rings, how do you fasten them to the banner, just use a carbiner or something to link the grommet and the rubber ring?

Yes ... we use shackles or just stainless steel "S" hooks to join the rings to the banner.

Believe me, you won't need the steel cables, all those eylets etc especially with a mesh banner and a rubber ring in each corner.
