I was delighted to hear that we had won awards for both projects we recently entered in the Signs of the Times/International Sign Association annual sign contest. (1st place in one category and honorable mention in another.) It's one of the reasons I decided to attend the show in Las Vegas next month.
While some question the value of entering contests and winning awards, for me it accompishes a number of things.
First off it will aid us in our marketing efforts. Awards impress clients and help justify fees in a subtle way. An award winning studio isn't a bad thing.
Secondly it is a realized dream. Its an honor.
We were celebrating the milestone a couple of weeks ago in our shop and I mentioned to my crew that it had been a very long held dream of mine to have work good enough that it would appear in the pages as an 'award winning' project. One of the crew asked how long ago I first had that dream.
I went into my studio and looked up my back issues of SOTT... sure enough there was the dusty and yellowed issue that inspired the dream so very long ago. Although never a subscriber. I had always tried to pick up the award issues at the supply store to oggle the fine work pictured in the contests. Those pictures always served as an inspiration.
The issue I remembered was dog-eared and the cover was loose and worn. Obviously I had paged through it many, many times. The date on the cover... January 1984, which was before most on my crew were even born. There were later issues too of the sign contests through the years. But that one was the one that started it all.
Now it's on to the next dream.... hmmmmmm.

Dan is the man, if there was an award for the one who we all believe deserves it, you would be the winner. These things don't just happen, it takes lots of hard work and dedication. I believe we all are very proud of you.

Congratulations Grampa Dan An inspiration to everyone! (Us "newbees" especially) It is good to see someone who so freely gives of time an advice and is an inspiration is justly rewarded. Maybe in 20 to 25 years I'll win an award like you and your shop just did. I just hope I can give as much back.
Thanks Grampa Dan
