1.) Whenever I open a folder that has ai, psd, jpg, etc files....all the file specific program icons appear immediately next to every file except Illustrator files.
Illustrator file icons s-l-o-w-l-y appear one-by-one......but it takes forever.
What's with that? Illustrator CS.
Thanks for the help.

when I open a folder, the icons start out as some generic document icon... & then the proper icons pop up going down the list in sequential order, my CS icons are not lagging behind my photoshop icons or .tif icons... but they don't show up instantly either. How slowly is s-l-o-w-l-y-?

This is a wild shot.. I raed about this somewhere..
Some graphic files have thumbnail code in their headers. Some do not. I am not an expert on which ones do or do not. However, I beleive not all AI files do not. Thus, as each file opens the file must generate the thumbnail code for each one. Im not sure but I beleive you can activate or deactiveate including thumbnails in the headers via your software.

Ahhhh....Curtis...you may be on to the solution....I do believe I have a "thumbnails preview" set to on somewhere....I may try clicking that off and see what happens.
Doug...yeah..mine do that..they sort of start out generic looking and the "boink....boink....boink" they change to the CS icon one after the other....
Si and Steve...I haven't run Spybot or AdAware in a while...I'll do that too just for good measure...

Curtis, is right. you can also right-click the individual icons to properties and look at the preview settings (illustrator thumbnail settings > don't generate/16/24/32bit icons).
there's also a checkbox in CS to alter the thumbnails at file save.

Ok...I see how you can do this for individual files...but how can this preference be set globally for all illustrator files, even ones that have already been created?
Also - new question: How can I set it so that all files are shown by type by default instead of by name order?
I thought I had this down...but files keep showing up by file name convention....I want them to always display by the file type???
Thanks again.

When I view directories in Windows Explorer, once I change the View menu to "arrange icons by: type" then under "tools" you can choose "folder options" & select the top choice under the "view" tab "set all folder views to match current"
