Greetings got a call to hand gild a transom of a custom boat, high-end. Large area to gild, approx. 20" by 7 ft. wide area, plus hailing port. Have done some leaf work, probably will use patent, no gilders tip-outdoor application.Anyone know of a good suppler / product? Also, should i use a sealer to protect gold-don't really want to soften the luster, recreational boat, not fishing type use- they told me.Thanks

Use 22k or 23k leaf and in large letters either slow your size down to how fast you can gild or use quick size and do a few letters at a time. Two people sizing and gilding works best for big letters. Surface prep is the fussiest part of the procedure.
On a boat I would always clear coat. I prefer a two part automotive eurathane brushed on without any reducer.
I'd do the outlining after and over the clear.

Their website is letterheadsignsupply.com, and they have an 800 number on the site. Ron Percell (at LSS) not only has any gilding related item for sale, but has done gold most of his adult life and can answer any questions that come up.

Hey Bob, I can remember both Arnold of A/E and SignGold when I lived in Haverstraw NY, both would call you when they felt like it, I guess to promote their business. As another matter of Fact, the only other person that also calls is Sid Moses and getting a call from Sid is also memorable

Ditto on what Joey said about calls from Arnold and Sid I just ordered from Sid yesterday.
And just what is it about Art Essentials that makes them not nice??? I've bought from them for years and they have been nothing but great. Arnold is quite knowlegable about the products he sells. Nobody I have dealt with there has been rude or in any way negative towards me. So they're not exactly chipper, BFD, I'd rather deal with dry and knowlegable than charming and clueless!

In defense of AE, I have dealt with them since the 70's and have always had a good relationship. The old man(is that Arnold?) used to actually travel down the east coast once a year and used to stop in my shop. The son is running things now...I just ordered some stuff last week as a matter of fact.
I always thought the old man sounded like Henry Kissinger.

I've always gotten a kick out of Arnold. I've even been in their place personally to pick up Gold when working on a job in New York. In addition to the occasional calls, I hear from him every time any of our work is in a trade magazine.
Once, as we were shooting the breeze, he said they used to offer credit but quit. He told me when they couldn't collect from someone, he would turn them over to his wife "...and may God have mercy on their soul!" I still laugh about that conversation.

He is retired. I have spoken to his daughter several times. I always liked them.
However, the Purcells are cool people, too. Very nice people. I used to do work for Ron's uncle and his Dad... I don't hold that against him. Hahahahahahaha! Small world, eh?

Thanks for the info to all-this BB commadarie works !!, i too remember his "cold calls", mostly from the late 80's and some. May post the finished product, the font was picked out alredy for the transom name- were talking Desktop "commando" choice.Jobs like these need to be in gold Leaf to look good huh?
snows melted here, haven't seen too many woodchucks though. do mushrats count ?

Hello Mark, I want to stress the use of a clear coat. A boat is about the roughest service out there, and the gild will need a strong protectant.
I don't like to use slow size when clearcoating, due to the amount of vapor and oil trapped under the clear. I recommend quick size.
And be careful with the clear coat. Definately test your combination before doing the job for compatibility. There currently is not a decent sign product suitable for clearing gold. The One-Shot uv clear sticks well, but will only last about a year.
I am currently using one shot quick size (watch out, it's really quick) and DuPont Imron 500 clear, activated with no reducer. And here's the trick...the activator must be fresh. Once the can has been opened, it lasts about 28 days until it goes sour...and you may not know it until it falls off in short time.
So have fun and test your products before hand so that you are not re-doing the job in six months.
