Hi. Hoping one of you computer gurus can help. I installed a free Registry Repair Wizard last month. It fixes 15 problems every time you log on. It was great, as it said I had a lot of issues. Finally I got them all fixed, then I noticed my computer was acting weird.
(example: in Yahoo I can send but can't get any IMs, only see a blank text box, can't see dates or whther I am logged in on the BB, I can't use emoticons on any site, it messed up Norton & AVG among other things)
With this program, you can go back & restore what the Repair Wizard "fixed". So I did....BUT....I accidentally clicked "delete" instead of "restore" on the selected files!
So I reinstalled Win98SE on top of the old one, thinking that would help. My ethernet card went belly-up! I had to have the cable guy here yesterday and it even took him about 90 minutes to fix.
So I am up and running again. But still with the same issues. I downloaded IE 6. something-or-other from Microsoft. I uninstalled/reinstalled Yahoo. Nuthin doin.
Any ideas? I apologize if my info seems vague, it's just that I am NOT computer savvy. Thanks & love.....Jill

Hi Jill, All I can offer is a little advice for the future. When you see something for FREE remember that free is a four letter word that starts with F. The registry is a scary place which even fully trained Jedi Masters should beware. You probably deleted some registry keys. Try re-installing those programs (IRC, etc.) that aren't working. Norton Utilities has served me well over the years in maintaining my PCs. One of the utilities is WinDoctor which accomplishes what I think you were trying to do. It might not fix your current problem due to the deleted keys but keeps a running system doing just that (again, for future reference). Windows 98/98SE are fragile (you can sneeze and f___ it up). I still run it only because I'm still using Gerber GA 6.0. If you have the driver disk for the NIC you should be able to re-install it. Have your Win98SE CD near by because it will keep asking for it too. It's a PITA no doubt. Wish I could help more. I hope some of this does. Good luck.

First do a HD search for 'registry.vbs'. If you have this it is a virus. I dont know if it comes with the Registry Repair Wizard or not. By the way which wizard did you get?
Second, and Im reluctant to link this but I cant think of anything else, search for 'Rb0*.cab' and look at the dates. If one is dated before you got the program you could do a registry restore. Here is a description on how to do it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221512/EN-US/
Beware that a mistake would make Windows unbootable. I dont know Win 98's policy on overwriting the registry so Im not sure how difficult a reinstall would be from this point. Have fresh boot disks available if you try this. If you arent confident that you can do this get a tech guru (who has done it before) to do it.

you can reinstall windows safely. Its done all the time. It will overright corupted settings safely. And if there is nothing serious wrong before hand your programs will all run fine afterwords. And, it will right back registry settings that may be deleted using certain cleaners.
A rule of thumb when using registry cleaners. If you see something in the clean list with a name of software of fonts you know you are using. Then do not clean it.
