Were was that jam at Doug? The Wetlands? My brush with fame was meeting Bear (AKA Owsley Stanley) at a TOO show in Ohio. My wife is the person that found his jewelry when it was stolen in Chicago.

Hey Greg, I was posting at the same time & missed your post... close, I was down at wetlands almost once a week all through 1990, but this particular show was at a kind of lame hall about a mile from there. I just googled up a site called The Mockingbird foundation & on their 1989 setlist I was able to refresh my memory of the name of the hall:
quote:Friday, December 15, 1989 Ukranian National Home, New York, NY
...Show Notes: Phish shared this gig with Blues Traveler. John Popper guested on harmonica for Bitch and JJLC.
...found another excerpt on Phish.com "After a few days off, band and crew traveled to New York City to join Blues Traveler for a double bill in the unlikely confines of the Ukranian National Home. Blues Traveler had discovered this most unusual venue a few months earlier and suggested joining forces in hopes of drawing a capacity crowd to this fairly large space (approximately 1200 capacity). Phish played the first set and were joined by John Popper and his blitzkrieg harmonica during Funky Bitch and Jesus Just Left Chicago."
Those excerpts doesn't mention it, but unlike many other shows I had seen with Traveler & Spin Doctors... this had no one designated as the "opening act" or "headliner"... they both just took turns playing sets all night, ending in a finale with everyone on stage. It was pretty freeform & the lines between stage & audience were non existent since almost all of us were regular fans & this wasn't even a bar, just a private venue, so Brendan (BT's drummer) gave me the nod when I was checking out the unused percussion instruments.

In high school I was painting Christmas windows at a restaurant. Bill Madlock, then a Pittsburgh Pirate, saw me. He asked me to paint a Christmas scene on the fancy glass stormdoor on his house. Many years later, I lettered Penguins' Tom Barrasso's golf bag. Last year I did a banner for Mario Lemieux's brother's hockey school. OH! And I used to babysit for Mark Ricci, the guy who played a scientist in "Night of the Living Dead". He was George Romero's cousin. AND! Several years ago I striped and lettered a helmet with the help of a body shop for Tommy Morrison. Years later I lettered one of his racing Corvettes. His Morrison Motorsports racing team, based in Albany, Georgia, was one of the best known teams in Corvette racing history. In 1997, Tommy donated his #92 ZR1 to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. The #92 ZR1 had competed in the 1991 24 hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. It was the first racecar from IMSA competition as well as the first Corvette in the Smithsonian's Transportation collection. It was a fitting tribute to one of America's most dedicated and successful Corvette racers. I'm on Lee County's Development Authority. We developed our first industrial park in 2003. Govenor Sonny Perdue of Georgia hugged my neck during the ribbon cutting ceremony. Does that make me special? Hahaha!

Charles Carroll of Carrollton, who signed the Declaration of Independance, was my ancestor.
I got Joe Piscopo's autograph picking my husband up at the Cleveland airport about 20 years ago.
Last summer, I was delivering magnetics to our County Commissioner, & I was unaware that I was delivering to her campaign rally in our little town, I was just told to meet her at a small building in town. I was very busy, & in a hurry, 90 degree heat, so i took off in my cut off shorts, sleeveless tank top (with paint all over it), & my tattooed arms. When I got there, there were people EVERY where, & the Commissioner was dressed in a nice lemon yellow suit, with her hair pinned up so nice, & she said, "Bobbie, have you met Senator Robbins yet?" Oh my! I TOOK OFF quick as I could so he would not see me looking like that! Later, I explained to her why I ran off, & she assured me he is a very nice man, & would have loved to have met me. Darn! Missed out on meeting him!

I worked for Lexington Scenery & Props in North Hollywood and then to the new building in Sun Valley across from Burbank Airport. One of the fun parts of the job was meeting some famous people, and of course the people who also worked there had all their stories. My boss Nancy talked about working at the Globe Theatre in San Diego and one of the people used to do peoples hair. Her name was Karen Johnson (?) and she needed some money so did a bunch of the peoples hair , permanents. Anyway fried some hair and really caused some damage. She latter changed her name to Whoopy Goldberg. My altime best was to meet Ringo Starr at a art directors house.

Over the years I got to meet a lot of famous race car drivers. This photo turned out to be pretty special. Bobby Allison made an appearance at one of our local tracks back around 1985. I had to letter his name on the local car he was driving that night. My son and I were able to meet him and talk for quite awhile. This was a year or so before his career ending head injury. Youll notice this photo is autographed.Fast forward to 2002, Bobby Allison was making and appearance at one of our other local tracks. So happens my son was racing at that track. I decided to bring the photo along to get autographed. I stood in way to short of a line to get the autograph. Most Nascar fans have no inkling of the past. Anyway, he was signing mainly the supplied little photocards. I handed him the picture and this great big grin broke out on his face. He stood up, shook my hand and gave me a great big hug. I'd like to say he remembered the photo being taken but he didn't...it was just an suprise reminder of a past, that at that time was still quite fuzzy. As I was walking away, a guy in line said " Boy, you sure did make his day " ")

Well, I've met a few famous people...at least they were famous to me. Since I worked at a TV station while in college there were times when I would happen upon some celebrity. Got to eat lunch with Jimmy Stewart. Met Frankie Avalon in the bathroom. Had a nice visit with Fess Parker at a fund raising event sponsored by the TV station.
On CSI, the person who plays Nick (George Eads) went to high school with our son and they used to hang out at our house after football practice.
I've slept with Gary Anderson, Mike Jackson, and Mark Yearwood. Wait a minute....let me rephrase that...I've slept IN THE SAME ROOM with those guys.
I guess my greatest claim to fame was that I was adopted by the creator of the universe.

Are we talking minutes of fame here, or rubbing elbows with?
I've rubbed many a famous/non-famous type all my life, like George can attest, racers weren't always known, some like Allison went on to great heights. I met Force throwing candy to crowd for friend that owns Jolly Rancher's wheelstander, Ed Jones; and John Force was on wagon that night. As I had already passed thru gates of the top/fuel funny car ranks w/Hellfire, my funny car; meeting John was no big deal, just another guy trying to make it, just like us. heheh, he made it...often wish that I had stayed racing, but,......that's elbow rubbing
Claim to fame, hmmmm, got some of them too, but looking like Forest Gump isn't my long suit. I'll go w/Preston on this one!!!

I guess on my father's side I'm related to Mary (Dodd?) Abraham Lincoln's wife.
My mother got to square dance with the prince of Japan on a cruise ship.
About a year ago, I learned that my congressman, John Duncan, was having a "constituent's meeting" nearby. It was in a local fire station, in Seymour, a little town south of Knoxville, which isn't too big itself. I figured a group of locals would sit in a room, hear him talk about current issues, and then one of his helpers would decide who gets to ask a question.
Man was I in for a surprise! Turns out, that after filling out a form of who you are, you go into this little room, 8'(240mm?)x12'(360mm?) BY YOURSELF with the congressman, and tell him what your concerns are. Blow me down! he wrote down what I was talking about, and sent a letter back later.
I've heard him on radio before, I know how he votes, I'm very much in agreement with it, he's one of the few congressmen that sends out a regular constituent's newsletter, (with bold info). I am totaly sold on the guy. One of the VERY FEW, VERY FEW, polititians I would call good.
A fine man and great representitive, JOHN DUNCAN JR.!!!!!!!!!!

Had tea inside Buckingham Palace. Also saw Princess Anne and Prince Charles' rooms and bathrooms. (It was the early 70's.) Princess Anne was a real tomboy and kept her riding boots on under a formal dress when she had to sit for a portrait. I was friends with a maid who worked there and she arranged for a special pass for me to come and visit.
Maya Angelou came to my college to speak (in the mid 70's.) I waited in line to shake her hand afterwards. The picture in the school newspaper the next day was of me shaking her hand!!! Also in college Robert Redford came and spoke to our Film Art class. It was shortly after he made Jeremiah Johnson. I was so euphoric afterwards that I walked into the men's bathroom by mistake. I thought "Oh those wash basins are lower than usual" and went into a stall. When I went to wash my hands it dawned on me and I ran out.
Worked as a cigarette girl on the Queen Mary at a 1930's era charity party. Carroll O'Connor gave me a $20 tip which was a fortune then!
Recently did a boat name for Joe McCord aka Rubber Duck. He was a mime who studied under Etienne Deroux. He formed a mime troupe called "Tarot Mime Show" and also played tambourine with the Grateful Dead. I just loved being around him. He took me back to the sixties just being around him.
This was fun.

Have partied too much on various occasions with the Grateful Dead, Santana, Eddie Money, Fleetwood Mac and many others musicians (am I dating myself yet?)
Was with Sheena Easton's at her first US performance on "Solid Gold" - got to meet the dancers, that obnoxious comedian Marty Cohen, and Marilyn McCoo.
Literally got knocked over in a store on Rodeo Drive by Tatum O'Neal - who kept apologizing to me

I grew up bangin' on a guitar to the radio and old 8-tracks. I would break all the strings down to the bass E and beat that to the music . . .
Other than that, which they wanted me to stop...(lol) my parents never heard me play or sing anything anywhere...not even in church.
A few years ago, I was in a little back-yard band with a bunch'a old guys. But we got pretty good and started playin' private birthday partys. We played one at the VFW.
My "15 minutes' of fame was that my parents came and stayed for all four sets we played, and heard me play and sing for the first time since I was about 13... and were pretty impressed that somewhere along the road of life I had actually learned to play an instrument.....
The other little 'fame' thing...our band got mentioned in the news paper for raising $1,500 dollars for 9-11. We also raised over $900 for a local family who's home burnt down.
I had my pic in the paper for sign biz once...I was painting/restoring a ceiling mural in an ante-bellum home here. In the picture, I was lying on the scaffold about 18" from the 12' ceiling. The caption under the full page, colour pic read: "Sheila Ferrell spends a lot of time on her back . . ." Where's an editor or a proof reader when you REALLY need one?? With writers like this...who needs 'fame' ...

One more. Had a "Senior Moment" back with the first post.
When Elvis was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, he lived in a house in Killeen. One afternoon, a bunch of us waited in his driveway for him to come home from the base. When he drove up he was still in his military uniform and he asked us to wait while he changed clothes. In about ten minutes he came back out, signed autographs, and posed for pictures with all of us. He was the true Southern gentleman that many remember from his early days.
He had three cars while he lived in Killeen, and one was picked up each day to be washed and detailed by the local service station just a few blocks from his house.
When he was drafted he could have gone into special services and just entertained others during his tour of duty, but he chose to enter the regular Army and was assigned to a tank batallion. I've heard that the war games at Fort Hood were rather intense with the opposing team trying to capture Elvis.

IN my 20's, I waited tables at a fine dining restaurant at Sam's Town Casino in Tunica Mississippi.
Some of the preforming acts would come in and eat (for free) after proforming. We always tried put them at a corner table, or in a private room.
They were all regular joes.
My favorite was waiting on Julio Eglesious and his entorage. They really seemed to celebrate life. Although there was a lanquage difference, I managed to take everyone's order. Julio acted like he was in love with me, having me sit on his lap and kissing my hand. I was a HUGE fan to start with. Pretty exciting stuff for a little country girl.
I recently moved from Nashville, where I bartended at the "World Famous Stockyard Steakhouse". There I made (alot of) crown & 7s for Reba. And a Jack and Mt. Dew for Tobey Kieth. I ate a (32$ for 4 oz.) lobster tail from Blake Shelton's plate, that he didn't even touch.
There I saw alot of "has beens" in the (country) music business. They were the ones who seemed snobby and jaded. (Esp. Barbara Mandrell). Can't say I blame them. Fans would just walk right into thier dinner party to get a glimse of them.
