The homecoming committee has chosen this logo for their promotional items. Any comments as to it's suitability for different items or suggestions on how to improve it are greatfully requested. One of my concerns is it's suitability for hats. Because hats are worn mostly by men, is it to ornate?

Perty!. . . But since you axed . . .just drop the little line & dot thingies down to center of the letter on each end of homecoming 2005.
I don't think the lettering is too ornate for a guys cap . . .seems like guys who like to wear ball caps want to collect all kinds and wear for the occasion...
Will they be done on lite grey like that?? This would also look cool on black, navy blue, baby blue, purple, a darker grey, yellow, or white ...

I like it. I think it should look alright on a cap.
Hey, what do I know? I don't wear hats...

kelly, @ 1st glance i thiught it was hold- EAST. The "f" needs a little "weight" on its lower...what do we call it? the middle part of an E ? ohhhhh boy ...i see some "creative" inuendo's coming !

It seems too purposely balanced, and contrived to achieve that balance.
The word and the flourishes have equal value, that to me is the main problem. Once the word is increased in size, with the H maybe a bit more centered toward the rest of the copy being smaller, and the flourishes are minimized, we might have something that reads with a primary message. It looks like a woman coming down the street with a really big necklace on,, and you don't know what to look at first.

ok here is my take on it, Lose the LT.Blue outlines , I think doing this alone would add to the readability a great deal.I however would replace it with an offset drop shadow darker then the lettering (of course). Another consideration might be to "flag" the main copy to follow the scroll work. And being as I'm not schooled about such things I would like to know if someone can tell me why I'm having a hard time with the 2 fonts, to me they just don't seem to work together.
btw - I do like your layout, I post only to see if my thoughts are sound

Kel, What happens if you reverse the light blue with the dark blue. The light blue outline seems to confuse the message. In order to make a message "pop" you need good contrast between the outline and the message color and the outline and the background color.

Thanks all... Shiela - I'm not sure why the outlines ended up high, I decided to make the Homecoming 2005 larger and for some reason decided not to center them again. I love the input -I won't always take it as right but it gives me fresh perspective. I will work on the F - being it is my town my mind has no trouble processing it, so thanks for pointing that out. The T-shirts will be one color only for budget reasons and the light blue outline would be on the hats as flat embroidery while the dark blue will be puffed. I'll try and post a pic of the logo without the outline and another with the outline only on the word Holdfast, which may help Myra's concern. Suelynn - I do have some printing I'm going to want done to put on magnets. I'm hoping to get paintings done of the old station, elevator sky line and catholic church for limiter edition prints, and we are going to sell magnets with the same images on. I also want just a few licence plates done of the art for that centennial glass piece.

Kelly, I like the logo, my only suggestion is that for the embroidered items you might only outline the "Holdfast" part and then single color the rest of it. On the single color t-shirt design (I love making single color t-shirt designs) you might try some creative shading to achieve a much more depth than a simple one color design. Here's what I mean....(Hopefully there's an image below)
