the current version is called CS (version 8). anything above 5.5 should all be similar. granted, newer items have been put in, but they're all very capable for the first time user.
there's also a "lite" version called Photoshop Elements. it's not as robust as the original, but it can perform many of the common tasks like the full version.

I have been using Photoshop on a fairly regular basis since 1994. I currently have the CS (Adobe Creative Suite) loaded on my computer. I have only scratched the surface of what this software is capable of doing.
Now that I have digital camera equipment, I can't imagine being without it.
Photoshop is a powerful bitmap based image manipulation software package. Along with a vector based Illustrator or Corel Draw program there isn't much you can't create.
I would have to agree with Scott, you could get by with any version newer that 5.5, but the newest CS version has some great high end features.

Hi Richard. I have been using Photoshop for the last 4 years. Last year I purchased version 7.0 and I really love it. Photoshop is not a real easy program to learn but it is well worth the time after you can start using it. I can't imagine what CS is like after using the 7.0. Hp has an online class that is about the basic CS. Go to hp.com and check it out. The classes are free and you can't get a better deal than that. Good luck.

I'm currently using Photoshop Cs and have been a believer since version 5.
I do ALL my designing and concept rendering with PhotoShop and often spend hours each day on the computer with it.
Even though I am delighted with the results I get, not a day goes by where I don't learn some new technique EVERY DAY.
I use it to edit photos, do drawings, colorize concepts, tweak and add to things, build web pages... and on and on and on...
The program is amazing and seemingly bottmless as far as what you can do with it.
A digital pad is a MUST to get really proficient in drawing with the program.

Hi Richard, version 6 is better that 5 & 5.5, but version 7 is WAY better again. Unfortunately they shift a few items from one menu to another at times, and they take a bit of finding at first. If you get the chance to use 7, you won't regret it- but it all depends on how intensely you plan to use it. I haven't tried CS/8 yet.
