I don't do enough of this to stick in your eye. But I have a job now that's a little too complicated to paint within this guy's budget and thought maybe digital printing could be a candidate.
Realizing there's a tradeoff between cost, resolution, vivid-ness and longevity, What is the current hot thing for producing a couple 4'x5' pressure sensitive full color vinyl prints? (and who's a good vendor to contact?)
Art is very vivid with lots of blends. I need 2 pieces, preferably without seams, to last maybe 4-5 years on the sides of a smooth metal race trailer (painted white). Thanks for any insights / experiences.

Thanks Mike - boy word travels fast. I just got a call from my good friend Miss Nettie who has filled me in about the wonders of VersaCam and we're going to do a test run and take it from there. The pricing seems good, the description of the durability and resolution sounds great, and I couldn't think of a nicer person to work with. So I guess my immediate needs on this topic are resolved for now. Now back to my weekend which is already in progress.
I'll let the board know my final impressions of the product and post a pic of the completed trailer in the portfolio page when the time comes. Thanks!

I've used digtal prints on some previous vehicles of ours with good success. In the time we ran them in harsh concitions I never noticed any fading.
I know Dan Antonelli swears by digital printing for much of his stuff.
While I still love hand produced painting, I think there is wonderful opportunity to reproduce complicated designs with detailed artwork and cool blends. In my mind the digital technology will separate the talented and skilled designers from the wannabes in a hurry.
As usual its all about design no matter what the method of production.

Thanks Dan. I tend to design this stuff that would typically require a spraygun to pull off - a holdover from my custom van painting days (and the computer makes those fills so easy anyway). I love the idea of letting the large format printer take care of the hard part. I'm too lazy anymore.
FWIW, the sparkplug is supposed to represent the letter "I" making the acronym "FIO" which stands for 'figure it out'. Client so far is refusing to let me incorporate that into the design, preferring to make people 'figure it out' for themselves. This local group is going to Baja or some such place and wants to look hip with matching trailer and shirts and flags on their rides. Maybe I'll give Nettie's new machine a good workout.
In next year's budget they want to add additional graphics to the trailer to really spiff it up. I'm proposing something like this, which WILL be hand painted:

Nice work Joe. It's cool to see you teaming up w/ Nettie on this, & so quickly on the heels of her new purchase.
I find it extra cool, having been around here long enough to have read of your work together in the past.
For those that haven't I searched the "Letterhead People" to see if I'd find the info I recalled. Here's one paragraph from Nettie's Profile :
quote: Around 1984, single and back in St. Pete again, I went to work for the Times as a paste-up artist. After about a year I lost that job.(got myself fired!) My sign career loomed ahead. I was approached by Joe Rees , a long time friend and Letterhead whose name you’ll see on the BB. Knowing I was creatively inclined, Joe asked if I'd come to work for him part-time. I'll never forget the day I was given my job description. Light office work, for half days at 3 bucks an hour. He started talking about vinyl lettering done on a signmaker. Vinyl Lettering?... Signmaker? Did I have any questions? "Yeah,... can I have a raise?"
Looks like you got the job in the bag Jeanette, make sure you charge him!
