My computer seems to be going wild! I was typing in Outlook Express, & all of a sudden, the cursor began to travel all the way to the bottom endlessly! Sometimes I will be online, & the window flickers, & all of a sudden, my programs go wild, popping open repeatedly, like tons of the same program, until I have to unplug the computer. Sometimes, it will type a bunch of plus signs. It has been doing this for a few months, & every time it did it, I would go to tools on the net window, & delete all cookies, temp. files, & my history. Then I would run a Spybot check, & a virus check. Everything was clear. I would defrag it, too. It would stop for awhile, then start again. Well, it did it today, & I did all the above, then turned it on, & it did it again! I have no virus, either, tho once last summer it found a worm, I think , & stored it in a "vault" to keep my computer safe from it, since it said it could not remove it. I use Windows XP, no I do not have the Service Pak 2, I uninstalled it from having trouble with my Signlab. I run the AVG antivirus thing, too. Have ANY of you had this happen? Seems to be behaving itself for right now...... Thank you!!!

Your CPU cooling fan may not be doing it's job. I've seen several goofy things similar to what you described and upon checking them out found that the processor fan was either not running, or had so much dust on the fins that there was little air flow.
Is it in a really dusty environment? You can use compressed air to blow them out, or vacuum it out.
Is your keyboard wireless? I've got a wireless mouse on one of my computers and sometimes out of the blue it pops up the right mouse click menu.

Likewise as Dusty says, I've also had similar effects from a totally dusty CPU fan. The fans are very easy to remove from the CPU chip, most have simple metal clips that hold them in place, and a wire plug lead. Of course do this with machine OFF and be sure to de-static yourself by touching metal frame.
Also...do you have Firewall security software? Nasty hackers can set "trojan horses" that are not discovered by average virus software. These trojans can cause the same symtoms (plus more) that you describe. When these trojans are set, the hacker is notified, and can perform all sorts of functions on your machine: mouse moves, open programs, turn off monitor, etc.,etc., AND steal passwords, credit card info and such....(as I remember mostly while online) The symptoms and effects will appear to be intermittent or periodic.
I've had that happen when I had plain Norton AV and had to upgrade to best Norton Internet Security which upon install fixed it. I now have all attempts to set trojans blocked and alerts given by the firewall software. Surprisingly enough, I get invasion attempts every few months...If you already have firewall security, it should have activity logs where you can check that.

Shorted wire in your mouse similar thing happened once so it might be something simple like that. Just change out the mouse with a different one to see if that fixes the problem.
