Heads up.

Roland will be releasing a 54" versacamm with cutter in the near future. Target price is ~$24k cdn. vs ~$20k for the 30" model. If you're thinking of getting one you may want to wait a month or so and enjoy the increased flexibility that a bigger machine will bring (think banners!). It will run the narrower medias as well as 54".

Roland *already* has a 54" solvent printer/cutter, in fact it predates the Versacamm.

Just remember, it may be a solvent ink but the output will still need to be laminated for durability.

Regular household cleaning products and gasoline lift the solvent prints pretty easily!

Already dealing with a 54" HP3500...

It's no big deal handling big prints. Having a big trimmer and a 60" laminator helps a lot.

I talked to Roland Friday, release date in Canada for the 54" has now been pushed back to the first week in January. Pre-order in US has been huge, they're struggling to meed demand.

I antied up my deposit and will have the first one that their Montreal distributer gets.

Laura, pricing on the new 30" machines has dropped a little already. I priced one at 17,900 cdn.
I have to question why one would want used equipment (presumably) without warranty or dealer support.
For this particular piece of equipment I estimate that over 5 years I will spend over 100,000 in media and inks. that will bring the total cost of ownership to over 125,000. That 125,000 investment, over 5 years, will generate at least 600,000 in sales. The 3 or 4 thousand dollars that I could save is small compared to lost time, wasted media and general frustration that I would incure were I to 'go it alone' with a used machine.
Every machine has a 'learning curve' to go through, dealer support can make this curve less painful. A good dealer relationship also facilitates repairs or warranty issues.

Why sweat the small stuff?

Is it true that you have to wait 24 hours before laminating the prints?

Bob, no.

I'm working with Jerry on a decent size project and I've gotten laminated prototype prints shipped out the door on their way to me within 24 hours of my phonecall.

Mike,

"Why sweat the small stuff"

why don't you just get the 540 EX II they already have now? The new one will only be a 4-color machine like the versacamm. We're plenty happy with ours.

How long do you have to wait then before the ink is ready?

Bob, Roland says you dont have to wait 24 hours,

The machine has 2 heaters if the heaters are properly set the print should be dry, How dry I don't know. Certainly dry enough to use a take up roll.

Having had a 54" inkjet for the past 5 years, we've found that prints are usually sitting for 24 hours or more before we find time to laminate anyway. It's just the way the workflow happens.

I've always used hot laminating films and Roland says this should be no problem, however, you betcha, I'll be testing for a while before I determine 'best practice' policies for this machine.
