There can't be anyone, I don't think anyway who was a young person in the 50's that just counldn't get into A RAY CHARLES, tune. He had a lot to choose from and at the time his music was called rythm & blues, you bet. That cat was pure witch with a personal blessing from god above. Just reflecting on a special that I watched tonight and waiting for the movie "RAY" to open soon. Have you got a favorite or two from the long list of great songs of Mr.Charles.....?
CrazyJack
P.S. I have built a new font (script) and dedicated it ..."Mr. Charles". Coming soon at a foundry.

Ray Charles was born here in Albany,GA. We've had a special tribute to him recently. In 2002, Ray Charles was honored with the first-ever Grammy "Heroes" Award and his hometown college, Albany State University in Georgia, named him "Dr." Ray Charles. A singer, composer, arranger, sax player, and pianist, his towering influence is inestimable. He... and we... have been blessed. Always enjoyed his music! Judy

Without the slightest second thought, "Georgia" came to my mind. Willie does a great version too but Ray is the man!

I think that just having Ray in my life growing up, just puts that soul into the soul! I looked at life differently, and my dad used to pipe blues, jazz and showtime althrough the house on various speakers. So no matter where you were, in the bed, cleaning the kitchen, out in the backyard or playing pool in the basement, we could hear it. My dad and mom grew up in Chicago, so they were around it all the time. He met Ray Charles, but, that was not hard to do in the 40's. If you've never heard his music, be sure to get a cd and be ready to kick back and boogie. It will take your mind off your troubles, for sure. What a great guy and musician.

not making this political....just the way i see it, regan and ray died days apart and the media was saturated with regan-ologies. and it bothered me a lot because for lifetime accomplishments and what each gave to the world....i think ray charles was the least concerned with what he got in return for all that he gave the world....he was more of a "gandi".....and his passing was not givin the importance it should have had.

Just hearing Nora Jones, doing a version of "Drown in my own Tears", about ripped my gut out. I first heard a "Ray" tune in 55'it was called "It shoulda been me" (with that real fine Chick). I had no idea who this was and didn't really care at the time but when I hear that song now I feel the same moment as if it is still 1955. I think Ray, went beyond genius to the true prince of passion as an artist. Just close your eyes and imagine what he felt. BTW...great responses from all of yooz.

P.S. Listen to "Cinncinati Kid" sometime.

Drown in My Own Tears is one of my favorites. I also like "I've got News for You" Most people may know it from the Edgar Winter White Trash alblum. I'm waiting for the movie anxiously. I really enjoyed Al Green on the special. While everyone else seemed try to make a big deal of the song they sang, Al Green just went out and had fun with it. He was doing all those moves that Cedric The Entertainer borrows from him.
Just a coupl'a months ago I heard a great interview on NPR with him and he was still working, teaching & promoting music with high school & college students who were interested in seriously persuing writing & singing jazz & blues . . . .

I heard a story once that involved a Ray Charles tune "Born To Lose". It seems that in this medium-sized city up here in Canada, there was a "suicide hotline" established where folks could call just to talk to someone if they were feeling down or depressed. This "hotline" was mostly staffed by volunteers, and this one particular evening, they were short staffed. A volunteer was on the phone talking to someone, when the second line rings. With 2 callers, this presented the volunteer with a dilema, so she put the person she was talking to "on hold" while she took the second call. Unknown to her, the person who was put on hold, got to listen to Ray singing "Born To Lose" while she was attempting to get the second caller's number so she could finish up with the one on hold.
If you've ever heard the Ray Charles song "Born To Lose", it's not really one that you should listen to if you're depressed or in a suicidal frame of mind. The Muzak background track was eliminated from that number's waiting list in very short order.
