Yup! I've seen several hundred concerts including metallic 5 times. Always a great show, one time was without Hetfield because of him catching fire from the pyrotechnics though.

Some of the best ... and worst shows I've seen were Metallica. Even most of the "kids" I know (kids friends) don't listen much past the black album ...

...liked 'em best before the black album.. black was beginning of seeming somewhat of a formula, but still likes a lot of that & still enjoyed the live show after that.
..actualy I did enjoy the S & M one with the symphony as well

The black album was the end of Metalligreed's career IMO, it pales in comparison to everything they had already released.
The first person that can tell me the *original* album name for "Kill 'Em All", why the name was changed and what the original cover art was, wins.... absolutely nothing!

They wanted to call it "Metal Up Your Ass", cover art was a sword sticking out of a toilet, (I think). Record company did'nt really care for it, Cliff said, referring to the record executives, "Kill them all!".
Still think its their best album!

IMO when Cliff died the band died ... and the business began (nothing against Jason)
Being that they recorded Kill em All here in Rochester they were big around here early on. When I was a senior in high school the drummer in my band did a weekend metal radio show. I clearly remember cruising around as they played the entire Master of Puppets album commercial free the first night the album was available (I taped it too... don't tell Lars). Couple months later Metallica came around (opening for Ozzy) and my buddy got to interview Lars and Cliff for the radio ... I got to meet (see) them quick as they walked through the lobby.
Last time I seen them (4-5 years ago) they actually pulled stools onto the stage and SAT DOWN TO PLAY FOUR HORSEMEN ... almost honky tonk style ... that was the last straw for me.
Wanna see a fun metal show ... check out Slipknot if you get a chance.

Mark, Primus takes the lead in my book as far as most fun show, although I know they aren't most people's style. Can't forget the antics of GWAR either, but ya gotta be ready to leave the show covered head to toe in slime.

Pantera has some fun & unique embellishments to an all out good metal show. Slayer has been great every time I saw them Megadeth sucked, but I was bored that week, so I checked 'em out. Not metal, but Soundgarden was cool. Butthole Surfers were great. I liked Ministry. I saw Primus on New Years eve in San Francisco... was supposed to be Red Hot Chili Peppers... but they cancelled... I had seen them several times anyway, so was stoked to see Primus... Great drumming!

I'm not sure on the Metallica name but I think that was one of the proposed names for a metal magazine a friend of Lars was starting. Supposedly Lars told him to go with "Metal Mania" because Lars wanted to use Metallica for his band name.

I've seen Primus a few times. Soundgarden was one of my favs. too. Chris Cornell playing solo acoustic "Burden in my hand" at Lolapalooza ... priceless.
When Pantera was on their first tour the band I was in was to open up for them at this bar ... we were psyched... big time! Their bus broke down somewhere in Ohio ... we find this out as we are unloading ... on the radio we hear the show is canceled ... played a double set for 20 people. Oh well.

Metallica is my favorite band. I like the Justice and Puppets albums best but I own and listen to all of them. If you want to listen to some of their best live stuff check out the Woodstock '94 recordings and the EP's they released for the St. Anger album. The recent EP's have live recordings from the Justice album which they hadn't played live in a while due to the technical difficulty.

RHCP's was the headline act on one of the lollapalooza toura that I was fortunate enough to catch in 2 cities, Phoenix & Chicago. No, the "sock" attire was not in the lineup... but I think they all had flaming torches on their heads for the encore though which along with various other pyrotechnics... made for an eye-opening visual to go along with the awesome sounds.
Mark, did Temple of the Dog play on the small stage when you saw them? They played on Phoenix, but I don't think they did in Chicago.
I have no doubt you already had that trivia tidbit, but for fun though, I ran a google search on "orgin of metallica's name" got that same info. on the 1st hit from THIS site.
The internet is pretty amazing.

I used to listen to nothing but Metallica back in my high school years. Kill'em all, Ride, and Master are my favorite albums. After Cliff passed it didn't seem the same. The new bass player Rob (Suicidal Tendancies rocked) is much closer to Cliff's style compared to Jason. I still pop in a Metallica disc once in awhile when I need something harder that The Dead or The String Cheese Incident

Doug, I have no idea who played the small stage, it was a while ago ... obviously if Sound Garden was playing ... I remember Metallica headlined and there was a giant rat you could see for a buck.

oh, then you must have seen a different tour then me, since Sound Garden & Pearl Jam were both in the lineup (under RHCP) it was easy for Temple of the Dog do do a set with members from each of those bands.
Rene, I play Drums. Started in 1970... I've played a little of everything over the years, I like Stevie Ray style blues & will still tolerate classic rock covers, I was very heavy into "fusion" growing up after my first metal years Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep purple etc. etc. All the fusion greats came through Chicago where I lived in High school & we had nothing better to do in the midwest but see all those guys... Chick Corea, Weather Report, Mahavishnu, Zappa etc.

What can I say? Just a metalhead at heart. I'm sure I picked up the trivia about Metallica's name from friends who likely read it in some kinda guitar mag, which is why I wasn't sure about its origin.
I don't play any instruments anymore but in the past I've been known to play guitar, keyboard/piano, violin and vocals too. Never was really good with a guitar (short stubby fingers make it tough).
