I'm getting INternet Explorer messages popping up, that say "You're at 90% of your Quota". I regularly delete temporary files, cookies and history. Yesterday I even did a disc cleanup and deleted cache files. Today I get another message,"You're at 98% of your quota"
What quota??
The computer has been slow for a while, but I thought I just had too many programs installed. Typing, like here for the BB, is extrememly slow, too.
My computer, has also been getting slow. It has ooodles of graphic files and way too many programs! I do the same, with temporary files and cookies, etc. Anymore, even when I defrag, it doesn't seem to help matters. Even when I have copied my graphic files to disc and deleted them from the hard drive, still doesn't seem to affect the available space. I'm stumped too, and will keep a watchful eye on this thread.
Sorry, I can't explain the IE messages you're getting...
Cher.

Thank you, Si. I have AVG and run it regularly. No viruses.
When I checked out that link, I got a pop-up telling me that there was something wrong with my registry, but turned out to be a sales pitch for another site.

ITs not always a virus There are TONS fo stuff that are spy ware, hijack ware, and scum ware all running in the background. All taking up resources.
They gotta go. One client had over 339 different peices of junk all running in the background. His machine was like molases.
Cleaned out the junk and the machine suddenly ran like new. He thinks i am a computer genious

It sure sounded like something a virus would do.
Quota? Perhaps it is a russian-built computer.
There is something in a computer called a registry--I think it is a windows file that kind of keeps track of all the software and fonts and stuff you install. Not sure tho.
Gene, 339!? That's a lot of background junk; I'll bet it did run like molasses. haha.
Unfortunately, you could write a book about what I DONT know about computers; so, I have NO advice.

If you know nothing about a subject & can't offer any advice, why would you post useless blather instead of shutting up for 5 minutes and maybe learning something?

each will pick up things the other has missed. Like Curtis said, you will find hundreds of things on your puter you never knew were there. The first time I ran spybot it found over 400 questionable 'items'... and I thought I was a safe surfer.

Lotti, In addition to running Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc. Go into Add/Remove Programs in Comtrol Panel and look for any unusual programs you know you didn't install. Some names to look for are Windows SR2, RON Display, anything with "search" in it, and anything strange looking. If you don't get rid of these things in this way, the pop ups and other crap will keep coming. This is from experience.
Another remote possibility for "quota" messages is you have quotas set for your disk space. Right click your c: drive in My Computer and click on Properties. See if there's a Quota tab. If so, check the settings in there. Just my 4 cents worth.

Thanks, guys. I'm not sure the problem here is spyware, you might have missunderstood me for using the term pop-ups. These are not the annoying advertising type of pop-ups I'm talking about, but Internet Explorer messages. But there is no place anywhere, in properties, helpfile or other, mentioning a "Quota". That's what I can't figure out. I will, however, try and get rid of all the junk I can find.

Lotti..I have been running on my laptop for the last week because something called "TV Media" kinda took over my main computer. Similar occurances to what you are describing.
I did a search and it is a "spyware" type of thing. I located it but couldn't use any of the "remove program" option in Windows since it was always running.
My solution was to format my HD...BOTH partitions, in my case, it turned out.
I'm now back up and running on the main puter but still have another few hours of work to do to finally get everything back to where it was before.
I DID have Norton Anti-Virus, with current updates running. I had Pop-Up Blocker running. I had SpyBot running. I had Ad-Aware running. None of them stopped that thing from invading my computer.
I hope you don't have what I had.
One nice thing about the "forced" format...my puter is now running as fast as it did when I bought it!!!!!!!

Dave, i hope I won't have to do that! Just had my other Computer done and lost a bunch of fonts and programs. Hey William, you might be on to something. I know I have to get rid of some old e-mail stuff, but shouldn't that be an Outlook Express message?? I hardly use that anymore. Always check my mail at the servers. Thank you for taking the time. Was that helpful for you Cheryl?
There are popups that appear as windows warnings. Some even look like old Dos screens and are intended to make you hit them to visit a website that sells...of course...popup blockers.
The best way to see if spyware is running on your system is to use the Task Manager. Click on the "Processes" tab and it will show you which programs are running at the time. Many of the popups and spyware programs leave small programs running in the backround that are activated when you launch your IE Browser. Once identified, you can simply right click on them and choose "End process" to disable them. Jot down the names of the bad programs and do a search of your hard drive to find and delete them.
It's a little time consuming, but will save more time down the road whith you computer running faster.
Many spyware companies target the IE browser to get into your system. Swithching to Netscape, Firefox or another browser does help reduce the frequency of getting bogged down like this.
Hope this helps... Rapid

is it when you're connected online? if so, it could be hoax pop-ups trying to get you to "ok" a link to something more devious. a pop-up stopper should help solve this, but i do think you have some type of ad/spyware or trojan on your system. another fine freebie (5-day trail) is AdWare Away. run each of the 4 scans for adware, spyware, page hijackers, and trojans. it's a little more thorough, so plan to read the instructions. it's very good at cleaning off some very stubborn buggers that the most common ad/spy searchers miss.

Word of advise! take it from someone who just went through this. yes, it sounds like spyware stuff. Start RIGHT NOW downloading info off your computer that you want to save. The longer you go the worse it gets. I had to get my stuff re-formatted. After you get it fixed, be very careful of the sites you visit. Do not put song downloading programs on your computer. and stay away from porn sites. Not that you was looking at them.
