The answer to this must be obvious, but I can't get it figured out. I usually use an old version of Flexi, but am trying to get more familiar with Illustrator.
In typing a word in a script kind of text (lets say Brush script on a curve), you get overlaps where the letters touch.
How do I weld/merge/make them compound so I have one object of all the text without the overlaps? [It's easy in Flexi,I'd just like to know how with AI, and can't get there]
(Thanks in advance)

I think version 9 has Pathfinder under the windows menu... the top left square is the "add to shape menu" this will unite the text AFTER you have outlined the text. NOTE: make sure after outlining the text that you ungroup them. Good Luck

Yes, merge is in the pathfinder window. You have to creat outlines first, then merge your paths. I have the best luck ungrouping the text and merging only the overlaping letters.
On a second note, I've found script lettering to not look the best on a curve, but it also depends on the letters. Letters with decenders look the worse so if you don't have any lower case "y"s or "g"s for example, it sometimes looks OK.

(Dave, I was only being facetious about brush script on a curve- I can't stand it- the only way I've found script on a curve works is if the letters are all virtually upright, or the word is very short. I was also going to add something about black letters and a red shade too, but decided to rein-in my sense of humour)
I appreciate the help!

"Compound Group", Command 8 if you're using a Mac, Control 8 if using a PC, ain't got a clue in Linux.
It helps if you Outline them after Kerning them to the proper spacing, and in Illustrator, select them individually and kern them one at a time. Too many Sign and TV guys Kern the whole bunch at as a group, and end up with something that offends the eye.
