hennie and i taped windows(we need new ones anyway)clean off the carport(my work shop)put everythng the wind can pick up in the storage sheds and put my insulation for the building in there also. got the tank filled on ther mobile sign shop, it has a 6.5kw generator on it so we will have power when we need it. the new building is jusr 2 end wall skeltons, so it shouldnt have much wind resistance and shouldnt suffer any damage. i would be all upset if i had some sheet metal on it. the sheet metal for the building is sittin on the ground still banded together in one 2000 pound bundle, dont think it will go anywhere...i got all the lines, power, phone & cable underground this summer so no problems will occur there. got gas stove, so we can eat and as of right now 10:30 am wed NO ICE AVAILABLE. so we shall see................

Consider putting tarps over anything of importance, even if it's inside! I did this to all of my shop equipment, and as it turned out, a good thing I did!

Well, it's 3:30PM Wednesday. The hurricane is 12 hours away and it already feels like it's here (tropical force winds -- quite strong). The power just flickered. It probably wont be long before our power goes. So, I'm gonna turn my computer off (aww!), and I probably won't be able to turn it back on for 3 weeks.
May the Lord help us all.

I just got off the phone with Mike Sheehan in Pensacola. Mike has decided to bunker down and ride out Ivan.
As we talked, Mike took a stroll around his yard. I could clearly hear the wind howling and he headed back inside as quick as possible. It's going to be a night to remember for anyone along that coast.
I suggested Mike use his cell to call Bob Stephens periodically and let him know what is happening. Hopefully Bob will keep us all updated here.
BTW William. Bob told me about a great old signman in the area called Billy Bass. He talked about his skill with a brush. Is that your Dad?

YES. My dad IS Billy Bass, and he's quite good with a brush (although it's been a while, he's been a jeweler for about 14 yrs.) My dad owned Dandy Signs in Fort Walton Beach and worked with an excellent sign painter called "Mad Mac" (MacMillan), who is the one who taught my dad how to letter. My dad knows Mike Sheehan, but cannot recall Bob Stephens (that could have something with being an "old" signman ).
My dad didn't feel he would have to worry about computers invading the sign industry because you couldn't teach a computer to hold a brush. LOL. My dad also often said, "You don't lose money on a job you don't get." I've always liked that saying.
I'm pleasantly surprised that people in Letterville know my dad. Cool.
Thanks for asking about him, Steve.

I'm assuming Curtis has left as well? I tried calling friends of mine in nearby LaCombe, but there was no answer (VERY rare with 6 out of 8 kids at home) So I figured they'd headed away from the storm too. A

Hurricane Ivan is about 8 hours from landfall. It's 7:20 CST. Amazingly, as windy as it is, my house still has power. Others in Pensacola have lost theirs already. I certainly hope the storm weakens quite a bit in the next several hours, because it is already showing surprising strength considering how far it is from land. (I'm very shocked that I can still post).
Two have died in Panama City from tornadoes. Apparently, Panama City has already had several tornadoes. Tornadoes are far more destructive than the hurricanes that spawn them.
The hurricane is predicted to make landfall at 3AM. We're in for quite a night. My neighborhood has elected to ride Ivan out in our homes (and it's too late to change our minds now).
The power company estimates that some areas could be without power after the storm for as long as three weeks. An inconvenience, for sure, but if we survive, I won't mind the inconvenience.
I believe that we will be okay. It is my prayer that all affected pull through as safely as possible. May God help all of you.
Thank you all for your prayers and concern.

No problems here. It was a breeze. I think this was the weakest west side I have ever seen. We have one small limb down in the front yard and it was dead! The western side of a hurricane is the dry side but let's put it this way, a bird flying over would have left more drops.
We are very blessed here in comparison to what could have been. The bad news is that it looks like Florida is in for another pounding by yet another hurricane, Mr. Gene.

Ok I just got off the phone with Mike Sheehan. He and his family are safe from any danger but Mike's shop is probably totaled. Approximately 25% of the building was blown out and we're talking a 7,000 s.f. concrete block building.
Most of Mikes important things were covered in plastic and didnt get any water damage. His router table did get wet but Im hoping it wont be affected by it.
His home wasn't damaged just few shingles blown off. All in all he seemed calm about it all and was already making plans on getting back up and running. Today he's moving most of the things that can be stolen from the building and over to his house garage for safe keeping.
He said to thank everyone here for their concern. I asked him what the neighborhood looked like and he said it looks like a war zone. I doubt anyone here can imagine what it looks like there unless you have been in a major hurricane before. I have so I know first hand what they're going through.
This storm was bad and big. Its going to take months before people can get their lives back to normal if thats possible at all.
Mike is one of my best friends and I know him well. He will bounce back from this and be even stronger in doing so.
I hope all you others in Pensacola survived safe. Joe Endicot, Old Paint, Larry Williams, and William Bass.

Kathy, Glad you didn't suffer any damage! We were fortunate to be far enough away on the right side and got 40+ mph winds and rain. The worst part was the two dozen tornadoes spawned by Ivan. Most of the tornados were in Early County which is about 60 miles from Albany. But we did have one touch down in southeast Dougherty County. Trees were snapped and blocked the highway. Some homes in the area suffered damage but no one was hurt. Judy Tornado in Albany

We all made it through fine here. Curtis and his boys left around 10am going back home. We had very little, if any damage. Mostly leaves and small branches down. I did see a couple of signs that needed attention.
Basically we were extremely lucky and got by with just a graze!!
See ya, R.T.

We were very fortunate as an awful lot of tornados were being spawned on this side of the storm and were touching down everywhere. They were traveling at 50 to 65 mph. Two people were killed in PanamaCity and four in Blountstown. A mobile home park in Marianna was wiped out but thankfully no one was killed there. One of the TV/radio stations in PanamaCity has doppler radar with "Vipir" technology. They could tell when a tornado was about to form, its exact location, velocity and direction of travel. This may have saved some lives. We watched it until the power went off and then listened to them on the radio.
We were undoubtedly getting some hurricane force winds and gusts here between about 2 and 5 in the morning. It was pretty scary to look outside and see the pecan and pine trees bending way over, hearing shingles flapping on the roof, and big cracking sounds as big limbs were breaking off. Two big pines next to the house had me a little concerned and though I almost dozed off a couple of times, I don't think Jessica and I slept at all. LynnDee and the boys did. We were lying on the couches and living room floor, listening to weather man and his Vipir radar, ready to pile into the bathroom amongst the waiting pillows and mattresses.
We lost about 40 shingle tabs and plywood was showing under several of them. I climbed up on the roof in the wind and repaired them yesterday afternoon. The wind was still gusting pretty hard and I could feel the house quiver slightly a couple of times. A piece of tin blew loose on my barn and was flopping around as I nailed it back. Lost a piece of aluminum fascia off the shop. One of my pine trees blew over and big limbs off a few others. Not any serious damage here but my neighbor lost his brand new barn. It just uprooted the poles and threw it over on the ground. Luckily, they had moved their truck out from under it.
All of us are safe, but I think we will evacuate next time.

Just got off the phone with Shelia. They had hurricane force winds and lots of rain. Her power and phone just came back online a few hours ago. She and her daughter are fine. Although she lost a metal awning from her shop, things could have been worst. She also said that she had never seen the wind blow so hard for such a long a time. Judy

All trees fell away from our house, which seemed to be the case in the general area where I live. This seems to be more than coincidence to me as there are a tremendous number of trees down around an awful lot of houses. I'm very grateful. We lost a lot of shingles and, so, have a little (very little) water damage (a few spots on our ceiling). We feel very fortunate.
Apparently a 25-35 ft wall of water swept through areas near the water. This wall of water took out an interstate bridge and demolished our downtown area and several outlying communities. Many boats were actually carried onto paved roads ~ making for some funny (in a way) pics.

I'm glad to hear y'all survived the storm, but am so heart broken over the 27+ lives lost.
Just heard today of a terrible wreck where a nurse was killed on the interstate tryin' to get back to her home in Mobile after evading the storm in B'ham..
My friend Cathy's home did amazingly well, tho' she lost several trees and a carport in Lillian, Al.(Gulf Shores) She & her little girl Mel, have to head back tommorrow equipped with a borrowed generator, since for some crazy reason, Mel's school re-starts Monday there. Cathy's Mom & Dad's place did not fair as well due to major water damage throughout their home but many homes on both areas around their homes were totally destroyed.
I did'nt see this post earlier because I posted on Diane Balch's "IVAN" topic. Thanx for the thoughts and concern. :x
