The cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When ya comin' home Dad, I dont know when
But we'll get together then, Dad
You know we'll have a good time then

Thought of this song every time my son asked me to take him fishing.

I took him fishing and hunting

Wayne,
Cool. That's what music can do . . . .it can make you think, laugh, cry . . . . feel. Act.

That's why I love Jeff's recent post about his poem.

Music tells the stories of our lives and reflects the mood of an individual or the history of a nation.

I can only imagine the emotion behind a song like "The Star Spangled Banner". I can experience it in an event like 9-11.
"Amazing grace" never had the impact on me it did until AFTER I met the Lord. Then I understood the depth of the event that inspired the words.

I think music & lyrics help people understand each others hearts better than spoken words, books, photographs or art, tho' these things do touch people in incredibley deep ways too.

It soothes the "savage beast" . . .

More of my favs to whistle, sing and spontaneously aggrevate people with: [Roll Eyes]

"Why can't we be friends"
"Don't worry, be happy"
"Sultans of swing"
"I can see for miles and miles"
"Jingle bells"
"Big yellow taxi"
"Wild angels"
"Mama tried"
"Miss American pie"
"Fire on the mountain"
"Stuck in Lodi again"
"Take the money and run"
"Sweet home Alalbama"
"American band"
"Sunshine on my shoulders"

TODD?? Hel-LO!! I still wanna know . . .what's with all these sentimental posts lately?????? [Wink] [Big Grin]

Bonnie Raitt has so MANY songs that are poetry. I love Nick of Time.......and another great one...

YOU...there was never any other
You and I were created to be true
Isn't it love that keeps us breathing
isn't it love we're sent here for
Wasn't that love that we were feeling
deep in our soul
deeper than we know
keeping me holding out for YOU
There was never any question
You'll be forever on my mind
You and I were meant to be together
True hearts in the world where love is dying
And I might as well have been dyin' when we were apart
When you came back I felt the beating of my heart
It was you...only you...you...always you.
(sigh!)

My daughter graduated college this past May.
My son just entered his Senior year of High School.
I walk around all day signing
"The Cat's In The Cradle" same as Wayne Webb.
But, even though I swore I wouldn't let my kids be second to my job, it seems it turned out that way anyhow.
Oh, my job wasn't in the sign biz as a lot of you know. It was in advertising. I travelled a lot, and the night before my son would always ask me to sing him "Leaving On A Jet Plane" even though it always made him cry.
I don't remember when the last time was that I carried my son, or sang a lullabye to my daughter.
Those are moments I always cherished with my kids.
If only we knew when those "last times" were going to be, how we'd hang on to them for so much longer.

Sheila...to answer your question, I don't know. When I'm not being an aggravating imbecile, I'm kind of a wishy-washy sentimental guy.

For instance: My kids laugh at me because I used to get all choked up and head for the kleenex when watching the old movie Casper-the Friendly Ghost....remember the part near the end when Casper whispers into the little girls ear he likes, "Can I keep you?!" Tears me up every time.

Now is that sappy or what? and then I'm grumpy. I eat way too much sugar!LOL.

Lipstick traces on a cigerette
Every memory lingers with yet
I got it bad, like I told you before
I'm so in love with you- Don't leave me
no more.

Another one:

12 O'clock at night,
you walked out the front door,
said you were going to the drug store,
I knew you was lying
the drug store close at a quarter to nine.
Well I saw you kiss Willie across the fence,
I heard you telling Willie, I ain't got no sense.
They way yu been acting is such a drag,
You done put me in a Trick Bag - Ben E. King

This was the lyrics to Joe's Tune above.

All girl loosers go for you
(Don't ya just know it?)
<'Baby, don't believe I wear two left shoes'>
(Don't ya just know it?)

Ah-ha-ha-ha (ha-ha-ha-ha)

Alan,
Bill has seen Buddy Guy twice up at the bar Buddy owns in Chicago called Legends. I got to go one time. The first time it was a father/son thing with our oldest son and the next time we went with a whole group. The tickets are hard to come by but our son had connections somehow. Buddy puts on a great show! "Our song" is "Feels Like Rain"...still give me chills every time I hear it! [Eek!]

I bet it was fun. We have a little place called Waterloo Village were we got to see Buddy, Johnny Lang and Susan Tedeschi (sp?). What a time!

It's funny you mention him again today. You are personally responsible for my latest Buddy crazy (with this post). I was wishing I had your number while driving home so I could call and sing you some Buddy (or to Bill if he answered [Wink] ) "You may get me out of the country people but you'll never get the country out of me".

Have fun. [Smile]

Was driving home from an installation the day before hurricane Ivan hit and listening to the radio for news of the storm. They were playing Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" with the harmonica solo. So, when I got home, got out the guitar, harmonica and holder and tried it. Then I found myself playing the one in Billy Joel's "Piano Man". Don't really care for either song but it was fun to try.

Wayne,

There were just some REALL good songs back then that even without lyrics the tunes were just amazing.

Delzell's post reminded me of "Moon Shadow" (Cat Stephens).
I always sing this when I drop somethin' on a foot or cut a finger or somethin' . . . .or talk too much, LOL

John Deaton: There's a song by Brad Paisley, everytime I hear I think of you [Wink] it's kinda bluegrassy called "You'll never leave Harlan alive". all about coal mining in Harlan, Ky.

"In the deep dark hills of eastern KY
that is where I trace my bloodline
I read on hillside gravestone:
You'll never leave Harlan alive.

Where the sun comes up about 10 in the morning
and the sun goes down about 3 in the day
and you fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinkin' and spend your life just thinkin' of how to get away."

the last line changes to " ...and you spend your life, diggin' coal from the bottom of your grave."

I'm running down the road trying to loosen my load,
got seven women on my mind,
four that want to own me,
two that want to stone me,
one she says she's a friend of mine,
take it eaassssy.......
take it eaassssy.......
dont let the sound of your wheel drive you crazy
(Eagles)

-------------------------------------

This is a song that a few of my adolescent budies ( and yours truly) butchered at the expense of a friend of ours, last name Reamer.
the song originally was Dreamer, Supertramp.

Reamer,
your nothing but a creamer,
when you have your c*&k in your hand, oh no.

the rest does not get any better

---------------------------

Lola,
she ate granolla,
drank pepsi cola,
....

--------------------------

its the most wonderful time of the year

Sung at the end of each summer, coinciding with the back to school commercials using the same song, drives the boys nuts.

Blind Melon song

all I can say is that my life is pretty plain,
watching puddles gather rain...

...it's not sane...

You didn't have to love me like you did, but you did, but you did,
And I thank you.
You didn't have to squeeze me like you did, but you did, but you did,
And I thank you.
[Big Grin] Sam & Dave

It's such a pretty world today, look at the sunshine, and everyday's the same since I met you.
It's such a pretty world today, knowing that you're mine and happiness is being close to you.
And though the rain may fall our skies will always be blue, The sun will shine as long as I'm with you.....
Eddy Arnold [Big Grin]

AND one from a time that was not a happy time in my life, [Frown] but I still think this is a great song!
Back to the Island by Leon Russell
Now the day is gone and I sit alone and think of you, girl
What can I do without you in my life?
I guess that our guessing game just had to end that way
The hardest one to lose of all the games we played

But the time is past for living in a dream world
Lying to myself can't make that scene
Of wondering if you love me or just making a fool of me
Well I hope you understand I just had to go back to the island
Chorus:
And watch the sun go down (sit and watch the sun go down)
Hear the sea roll in (listen to the sea roll in)
But I'll be thinking of you (yes, and I'll be thinking of you)
And how it might have been (thinking how it might have been)
Hear the night birds cry (listen to the night birds cry)
Watch the sunset die (sit and watch the sunset die)
Well I hope you understand I just had to go back to the island

Well all the fun has died, It's raining in my heart
I know down in my soul I'm really gonna miss you
But it had to end this way with all the games we played
Well I hope you understand I just had to go back to the island
