Your foot depresses the button on your upright vacuum cleaner; you switch it on and as you begin to suck all manner of debris from your carpet.....you belt out a single lyric from 20 years ago and hum the rest because you only remember that ONE line......"...Skyyyy rockets in flight....afternoooon delight.."
I laugh at myself sometimes when for no known reason I sing out, "oh woe Black Betty, Blam-a-lam, Black Betty had a child, bam-a-lam, the damne thing gone wild..."
Or occasionally it's, "...like a picture she was layin' there, moonlight dancin off her hair, she woke up and took me by the haaaand, we made love in my Chevy van and that's all right with me...."
And very rarely this one flows from my lips: " ...and the man in the back says "Everyone Attack" and it turned into a ballroom blitz...."
What old partial lyric do you find yourself belting out while you're washing laundry or mowing the grass?

No seriously, it's not limited to lyrics. Alot of music I listen to has no lyrics. Dvorsak's (sp )"Carnival Overature" is REALLY powerful.

Mine's Sally Ann, an obscure bluegrass ditty about a young gal on her wedding day and her new hubby gets killed. Sad song,but hi-energy beat. "Who's going to dance w/SallyAnn, who's going to hold her trembling hand? When that fiddler takes the stand, who's going to dance w/SallyAnn?" now I 've gone and done it, won't go away for a week, probably still humming it at Ron and Kristi's this thur. lol

Greg, Dr. Hook used to play at the Duck's Breath Saloon, three doors down from my shop.....his bus driver, a Sign Painter used to hang around my shop while he was playing. I guess he preferred signs, to Dr. Hook.

Early one mornin' the sun was shinin', I was layin' in bed Wond'rin' if she'd changed at all If her hair was still red. Her folks they said our lives together Sure was gonna be rough They never did like Mama's homemade dress Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough. And I was standin' on the side of the road Rain fallin' on my shoes Heading out for the East Coast Lord knows I've paid some dues gettin' through, Tangled up in blue.
She was married when we first met Soon to be divorced I helped her out of a jam, I guess, But I used a little too much force. We drove that car as far as we could Abandoned it out West Split up on a dark sad night Both agreeing it was best. She turned around to look at me As I was walkin' away I heard her say over my shoulder, "We'll meet again someday on the avenue," Tangled up in blue.
I had a job in the great north woods Working as a cook for a spell But I never did like it all that much And one day the ax just fell. So I drifted down to New Orleans Where I happened to be employed Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat Right outside of Delacroix. But all the while I was alone The past was close behind, I seen a lot of women But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew Tangled up in blue.
She was workin' in a topless place And I stopped in for a beer, I just kept lookin' at the side of her face In the spotlight so clear. And later on as the crowd thinned out I's just about to do the same, She was standing there in back of my chair Said to me, "Don't I know your name?" I muttered somethin' underneath my breath, She studied the lines on my face. I must admit I felt a little uneasy When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe, Tangled up in blue.
She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe "I thought you'd never say hello," she said "You look like the silent type." Then she opened up a book of poems And handed it to me Written by an Italian poet From the thirteenth century. And every one of them words rang true And glowed like burnin' coal Pourin' off of every page Like it was written in my soul from me to you, Tangled up in blue.
I lived with them on Montague Street In a basement down the stairs, There was music in the cafes at night And revolution in the air. Then he started into dealing with slaves And something inside of him died. She had to sell everything she owned And froze up inside. And when finally the bottom fell out I became withdrawn, The only thing I knew how to do Was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew, Tangled up in blue.
So now I'm goin' back again, I got to get to her somehow. All the people we used to know They're an illusion to me now. Some are mathematicians Some are carpenter's wives. Don't know how it all got started, I don't know what they're doin' with their lives. But me, I'm still on the road Headin' for another joint We always did feel the same, We just saw it from a different point of view, Tangled up in blue.
Please bring the Beer to Jillbeans panel bash next August

too, TOO many to name, but more importantly, why are we continuously makin' these sentimental trips down memory lane with you??
ANYWAY . . . I think of some song to go along with almost any topic, or whatever I'm doin' or thinkin' . . . .
Music always makes me step back from a situation and find the humor in it . . .
Here's only a coup-l'a of examples . . . .
like today it was:
~~~~When I look back on all the crap I learned in high school~~~~`~~~~`it's a wonder I can even think at all~~`````~~~~~~~``~~~~~~`~~`~ . . . (kodachrome - S&G)
When driving away from and reflecting on a difficult person it's:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~Don'chu want somebody to love~~~DONT YOU NEED somebody to love~~~~you better find somebody to love~~~~~~~~~~ . . . (Grace Slick)
I know this is a new song, but there's a country song called, "She thinks she needs me" and I sing it to Emily all the time (we hold hands ridin' down the road, lol), but I change the words to:
~~~~~~She don't know how much I need her, she don't know I'd fall apart~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~without her kisses, without her hugs, without her refrigerator art~~~~~~
"They told me not to smoke it, but I did...and it took me far away.... And I turned out to be, the Only Hell my mama ever raised"....
And then when I just can't see Eye to Eye with someone I have to remember..
"Some folks like Hamhocks, Some folks like Pork Chops, and some like Vegitable Soup... And Roland the Roady, like Gertrude the Groupy, but Gertrude the Groupy liked groups"
This is a fun topic... I am singing constantly...and have been known to grace the stage from time to time... But I seem to remember and sing the songs that everyone remembers, but can't remember the words...
One of my Favorites was dedicated to Hopper...
