Girly friends...online chat....I think it would be simpler to just buy him a cellphone My son installed Yahoo instant messenger on this computer and it just screws up everything. I know it's alot of fun but it takes over as the default email and the search engine and pops up "handy" little junk on the desktop. I thought that I had gotten rid of all of it because yesterday, I uninstalled it and then searched all files and deleted anything that said "Yahoo". I got the email fixed back but can't seem to get rid of the search. I tried changing the search engine to Google: search, change preferences, change internet behavior, select the default search engine, google, OK
It's still using Yahoo search and it seems to be feeding spyware to my computer because ads keeps popping up trying to sell me "e-bloc" and telling me that "spyware may be on your computer" etc. I have run my AdAware program twice. The first time it found 68 "data miners". the second time only one.
Does anyone else have trouble with Yahoo? How do you get rid of it? Thanks

I had the same problem when my daughter installed AOL instant messenger. It seems to be fraught with pop-ups and viri (SP?) Her away message will pop up, with a link saying "check this out!" Then an ad for Red Lobster comes up when I try to use the browser. I have uninstalled it and stuff still sneaks in. I also found a lot of spyware when I ran a test. I do have Yahoo, but it's never been a problem. However, maybe the spyware is coming from it. Love....Jill

Spybot I find is a little better than adaware for that kind of stuff. It is still free like Adaware and you can run both on your computer (though spybot comes up with a warning that includes adaware, nothing to fret about though). Give it a go and see what happens, at worst you have to uninstall Spybot.

I hate yahoo and MSN now, they are getting as insidious as AOL with their hijacking of computers on the far upper right the IE lodo is there. Right click it and uncheck the yahoo virus sps bar .
or
Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web browser Click Start > Control Panel
If you have Windows 98 or Windows 2000, click Start > Settings > Control Panel
Open Add or Remove Programs
If you have Windows 98 or Windows 2000, open Add/Remove Programs
Search for "Yahoo! Companion" in the list of installed programs and click on it Click Change/Remove to uninstall the search bar
If you have Windows 98, click Add/Remove If you have Windows 2000, click Remove
Follow any prompts that appear The toolbar should now be uninstalled
This may not get it all. but its a start. if you know how to edit the registry do a search in the registry .
