On Aug.5, I get a call from Britten Banners in Michigan. The are after a "large" vinyl job at Watkins Glen International, and want me to give them a price on installation. (I have worked with them before on a job at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, and they are the "GREAT" to work with). The vinyl film will be the "see through" type as it will cover the second story windows on the Press Tower at the track, and have the SIRIUS Radio logo on the front. The old film on the glass will have to be removed. Total square footage about 900 and two stories up! I hate heights!!! We get the conformation on Aug.6. I order a Man Lift and it arives Fri. Afternoon. I hire Larry Orr (Orr Signs) to help me. We start removing the existing film. There are (22) 47" x 123" pieces. We have to cut stripes about 4" wide to get this S**T off! We work on it, non stop until Monday. The new vinly arrived Monday afternoon. We started right in as it had to be done by Friday morning before Qualifying. Fighting the on and of rain was bad, but not as bad as the wind! We finished it Thursday night! What a job! Then it happened! Friday morning (7am) I get a frantic call from the track! The NASCAR Scoring people do not like looking through the vinyl! Guess what!!!! TAKE IT OFF NOW!!! My Man Lift was gone, so the track let me use theirs, and we went up (in fog and drizzle) and took it off!
I couldn't make this up! Thats why I missed the meet! I WILL be there next year!!!

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? As a former Chief of Timing & Scoring.... I would have killed the stupid %$#@#% that ordered them!

It is one thing to look at a car just sitting there....but...when a herd of them goes by at 190 mph....it is a whole different story!

Hopefully, you made some serious money on that job!

Britten Banners even sent a test panel to put on the glass and look at. No one said anything about it then, so it was a go!

Money good!!

could be the wrong material was used for this application. there are different types of window perf (hole sizes are different). it looked good for the little amount of time on. i would think if clear vision was as important as scoring racecars, they'd know better than to put anything on the windows.

The old vinyl was not perforated. It had three layers of film + glue. It was a heavy film, sort of stiff. When layers seperated, it was really wierd! We had to cut it in 4" strips to get it off. When the sun was out, the glue stayed on the glass. No sun, the glue came off with the vinyl! The company that installed it had really hard time because it was so stiff. The plus side was from inside, you saw nothing! You would swear that nothing was on the outside. Very little darkness and the letters were absolutely invisible! Never seen anything like it! He said it was made in China and material cost for the Film alone was $92,000.00!
I don't know what the size of the holes were in the vinyl, I have never used this "stuff" before. It comes of fairly easy! Of course it was only on there two days!
