For the past couple months I been strategically moving my belongings to Redding California so I can re-arrange my life in a more positive manner, so to speak. I will get to restart my mobile business and yet get to work with a fantastic sign a striping artist, Jeff Crank. I still have to move some vehicles etc. I will still have to return here to do my dealerships bi-monthly.

Next subject: This week in Florida.

Questions:

A - If you had a fully equipped mobile sign unit, would you travel to parts hit by the hurricanes to do on the spot signage for a week or two?

B - Or would you sit back and wait for the next Flea Market to open so you can wake up at 4am to be there to make stickers for the early morning rush by those who want a peeing calvin?

C - Do ya think that all the telephone lines will be up and running within the first week after the storm and that all the needed replacement signage will be had by those sign shops within the areas?

D - How many excuses can be given on why not to drive your mobile unit from one place in Florida to the next?

Opportunity knocks, but ya gotta open the door..

hi JM
Hows the move going? I heard Shasta was on fire and was thinkin about you moving around that time.Hope the move went smooth. As for the Florida trip...it would probably be a few weeks before all the insurance handlers would be able to start replacing the signs. So a person that had the mobile capabilities could probably stay busy for a while down there.I never really thought about something like that until you mentioned it.Someones gotta replace all the signage.
Have a good day and watch out for that fire.

Caribean Mike is one that would know the score on this one. He experienced a storm disaster there from both sides. His place was damaged and he dealt with insurance for that as well as doing insurance jobs for customers.

Mr. McCloed....please speak up.

Perhaps this is a rather dumb question, but isn't Florida one of those extremely RESTRICTIVE areas where one has to have a Contractor's Licence to be in a position to be doing any sort of installations of any size? That just might preclude any "mobile shop" from benefitting by doing any sort of reconstructive work. [Frown]

. . . . (If I did'nt have a small kid) I would be apt to call a coupl'a freinds with shops in the area and ASK if they wanted me to come help out with the enormous work load, which would be well after all the massive clean-up that provides such things a phone and electricity.

This would also include helpin' them out with THEIR home if they needed me. If I wanted, 'til then, I could get on with a construction company as my X & bro-in-law did in a huge, somewhat vulture-like raid of contractors on the area.. . . .but, vultures DO make quick work of cleaning up, don't they . . . .

At any rate, cosmetics and signage are usually the last touches of such restoration.

Ken,

Each city and county has different requirements. In our county the only thing you need to install non-electrical signs is an occupational license and workers comp. or at minimum workers comp. exemption. I'm pretty sure the folks up north of us in Jacksonville are required to have some type of contractors license.

Joey, you heading to Florida? Let me know if you need some help.

P.S. Every sign we've put up in town is still standing strong. Good for our installation reputation but bad for the checkbook in regard to getting some replacement/repair business.

Here in Marion County, a contractor's license is required to put up any sign in the county. In the Ocala city limits, you don't need a contractors license. It makes no sense! They also just changed the workers comp. laws in Fla. I believe it's required, to do any installations. I avoid installations. Too much hassle. Let the "contractors" deal with it.

I understand Florida laws well and have lived there in the past. I also done painted signs as well as pinstriping but never once installed signs, as that wasn't my job. I always felt and still do today that sign installation should be done by contractors so you can get on with the next job of making signs [Smile]
