I'm on the east coast and there are people in panic mode everywhere. No water, batteries, etc. in the stores already. I can't imagine how it is on the west coast.

You all be careful!! Illinois doesn't get the hurricanes, but we have weathered a tornado or two here. About all you can do is get somewhere safe and stay there till it blows over. Good luck to you all!

Nothing in the stores ... no water, candles, batteries etc. I was going to buy some food, but walked when I saw the lines. I'll have enough food for awhile at home already Pretty crazy.
I'm just going to fill up my huge jobsite water cooler with water, and a bunch of other drinking containers w/ britta filtered water.
I'm stocked on candles too.
Wish us luck!

I am located in Palm Harbor which is about 12 miles north of Clearwater and they ara telling us the eye will pass right over us.
We have removed everything from the outside of the building that the wind can grab and toss through a window.
We are up about 62 feet above sea level so we do not worry about floods but the 100 mph winds and rain are something else to deal with.
Many people are being told they must leave the area now and they will evacuate about 500,000 people before the storm it's us.
We have been through this before but for some reason this time seems very diferent and I must tell you this could be a wild one.
We have very long lines at the gas stations and the food stores were out of water and just about everything else I needed.
Most of the homes have covered their windows with plywood and tape in an effort to try and save them.
Wish us luck because I believe this time we are gong to need it.

Janet, OP and others, Please drop us a note here when the storm settles so we know you are OK. If we can do anything to help give me a ring, I am sure I can get my hands on some generators and other tools if needed. Dale

Thinking good thoughts for all you guys. Please everyone check in with us to let us know that you're alright. At least call someone to have them post that you're ok if you lose power or can't get online.
OP, I'm surprised you didn't specify that offer was just for the ladies. You sure that wasn't Hennie posting as you?

We were just told to expect 50-60 mph sustained wind, with higher gusts, for at least 6-8 hours tomorrow afternoon/evening, accompanied by heavy rain. And we are 50 miles inland from the coast. I hope you coastline heads find a safe place to ride this one out.....If anyone wants to come here you are welcome, but you will still get the storm...just less of it.

I went through 6 of these things in the 90's on the North Carolina coast. When I decided to move to Florida I figured the west coast would have less worry from storms. Good thinkin, huh? I am concerned, but not gonna get excited unless Uncle Charley turns into a high cat3- the media has a way of blowin things out of proportion (npi). My biggest worry is the boat- we are supposed to get 10-12 ft surge and I live on the water. Got the boat lift cranked all the way up and the lift beams lashed to the poles to cut down on sway. If the wawa gets that high I guess I'll have other things to worry about...
Never saw shelves at a full size grocery store get wiped out before... guess I shoulda gone earlier in the day. unreal traffic, where's everybody goin?

Me and Cobra both live in the first evacuation zones. He lives at the beach and I live right on the bay. I was born and have lived in Tampa my whole life. Closest we've had was Donna when I was a kid. Bought a house where I can see the bay from my roof in January. My yard is 6 feet elevation and they're predicting 13 feet storm surge. I have a creek in the back yard and roadside ditches in the front that both rise and fall with the tide, I'm screwed. Going to ride it out at Cobra's shop. Any good thoughts are welcome.

Hope you all have minimal aftermath. My heart goes out to you. Those are so scary. I remember everyone talking about Donna when I was younger.
Then, as my kids were very young, my husband and I and the kids, lived in south Fla. During that time David was coming. We had to evacuate since we lived two blocks from the beach and waited out David by going inland to friend's home. When we got there, the party had started, and there were 13 people there, a pup tent in the living room and two great danes! it was a sight to behold. The great danes and two people had to leave. My kids got to camp out in the tent as it was an adventure. Then at five a.m. I was awoken by huge winds as it sounded like the house was going to fall in. I was the only one awake, my kids and hubby, all the others were out like a light, some from their tropical drinks that they soothed their nerves with.
I was the only one to wake up as I kept one eye open, more or less. I had to try to get the guys conscience to help me push a couch against the door when the wind came. Scared and shocked how close it came, and the noise was worse than any tornado I ever heard, even the one back in the 60's in Belvidere. At that time, I really started praying.
We had been so worried about my dad because he never showed up. He was to drive up to Ft. Laud, from the Keys, and tried to come to our home near the beach but the coast guard wouldn't let him come past the intercoastal waterway. Then he didn't know we left a note on the door to tell him where we were inland. Since he couldn't reach us in Ft. Laud, he decided to drive north to the Red Cross in West Palm Beach, thinking he would be safer. I know he was worried about us too. We were worried sick about him. There weren't cell phones back then. Instead of going west, David took a wild turn north and hit W.P. Beach! Of all places! He was okay though it tore up the city. We were always amazed at my dad anyway, as he made it through two wars and a boat explosion, not to mention the depression and the streets of chicago. This wasn't going to get him, either.
Nine years later or so, When Hurricane Andrew hit, my Dad and his elderly friend drove his van to Homestead to avoid it hitting the Keys where they lived. But, since traffic was jammed with one road out of the Keys, they only made it to the Everglades outside of Miami when David went past them and on to Homestead. They were stranded out stuck out in the Fla. Everglades for four days! They had water and food, as the hurricane went over them and hit their destination in Homestead! He was spared again. But, the windows had to be rolled up tight due to the no see um's (squitos), and it was over a hundred degrees. His friend almost had a heart attack, but, was okay. Gee, I'm glad he didn't get out of the car with all the gators and critters around. To this day, I have a tshirt that has the map and says "I survived hurricane Andrew", with a little One Shot on it. My sis from Idaho flew down and spent time with my dad after that.
Then about 6 years later, when H. George was coming, My dad decided to ride it out in his home in the Keys. He was elderly and at the point where he kept falling, and we were trying to get him to move up to Illinois to care for him. The hurricane instead hit the Keys, causing major damage. The aftermath was worse as there was no power for over a week and the roads were closed so he could not get food and water. We called the Red Cross and some other folks finally followed up to deliver supplies. The neighbor left his dog in the trailor next door and the dog kept barking, so sadly, and also my dad could not get his badly needed rest. It was an ordeal and we couldn't get to him. But, like the trooper he is he made it okay and then my sis and brother got down there and moved him back north after 33 years. He never wanted to leave the Keys all of that time, since he said it was paradise, never any snow or achy bones like up north! Anyway, all turned out well for him again. You still with me?
Anyway, you get my drift, as you just never know anymore what natural disaster is going to come to your door. Be safe, never blink an eye, keep the spirit (and emergency supplies always). These things are the craziest as you never know where they're going. all my love, stay safe, Deb ps. let us know as soon as you can, as we'll waiting to hear from you guys!

dale, iam in pensacola now.....dint see anything from BONNIE. it made landfall 100 miles east of me. kissy...SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...you blew my cover...... i got lots of freinds in sarasota still and i fear for that area due to the unchecked growth and building thats going on there since the 80's. when i drove into sarasota in 81, it was a sleepy little florida coastal town with access to the beach for miles. you could almost walk the beach from bradenton to venice without any problem. now its wall to wall 15-20 story condos and hotels. the big problem with tampa and south ot it, coast line is no deep water. when i used to fish and go from sarasota out in the gulf, you had to go 5-6 miles off shore to get to 80 feet of water. here in pensacola you go out 3 miles and you got 2-300 feet. storm surge got no where to go but on top of the water.....i been on the phone most of the day .......

A few years ago when I lived in Fort Walton Beach, FL, a hurricane was heading straight for us...a friend went to Tallahassee to get away from it...needless to say it turned and headed that way...he came back home and, sure enough it followed him back.
He stayed, it took out three huge water oaks in his yard but everything else survived.
Again, Good Luck.

Guess it's going to be a rough weekend all up and down the coast. The national weather service has issued flood watches up here in New Hampshire as a result of the tropical storm moving up the coast ahead of Charley.
Somewhere betwen 1-3' of rain today, and then Charley's going to follow it up over the weekend.
Like we haven't had enough rain already....sheesh Rapid

We are riding it out in safe areas. As it turned out we got a big reprieve when it turned East and pretty much missed us. Just a few miles difference in where it made landfall made a huge difference personally. Thanks for the good wishes, they worked. Letterhead Power.
