hi everyone, i'm just getting into sign making and the place i work right now has had me me make a few signs for them. a customer came in and asked if i could make a couple for them i but i'm not really sure what to charge them. i wasn't sure how to post a picture so i will try to describe the sign. the sign looks kinda like a vintage style neon sign. it is double sided and 3-dimensional for a fictional business called the "Par Four Lounge". the middle piece is two pieces of mdf glued together and cut out into a kind of boomerang shape. i then drilled several holes through which i put dowels. i cut out three squares of mdf and nailed these to the dowels. a letter was painted on each square. i also painted the word lounge on another square and nailed that to a dowel. then cut out a round piece that was painted like a golf ball and nailed to the middle piece. this process was repeated for both sides. i also had to sand, prime, and paint the background colors on all the pieces i cut out. i greatly appreciate any help you guys can give, thanks...

Hi Matt [Smile]

How big is the sign?

How much did the materials cost?

How many hours did it take you to design and fabricate?

I think there are a few key questions that you need to try to answer, Matt...

What is your time worth to your company?

At $50 per hour (?)...well...you can do the math. Mark-up your materials and add that on.

Will the customer pay what you think the sign is worth?

What is the value to them? Will it help them present a professional image? Attract the kinds of clients that they want to attract? What are their objectives...and how well will the sign you've made help them accomplish these objectives?

At the risk of stating the obvious, it would have been better to work this out and have the customer agree to your price in advance...and have them give you a deposit. As it stands, you've already done the work...and are (in some respects) at their mercy.

Maybe one of the Residents who knows how to post a pic could offer to have you e-mail one for them to post on your behalf. At that point, at least you might be able to get some input as to what other people would expect to get.

If you're serious about getting into the sign business, consider starting out with a program like EstiMate Software.

I hope that helps.
