I just added this to the top of my Vinyl Application Instruction Sheet:
Note: Often our customers for one reason or another want or need to apply their graphics themselves. Vinyl installation is not rocket science, but it can be a pain in the butt. Please be aware that if we apply your graphic and damage it, we are responsible for replacing the damaged pieces. On the other hand, we can’t be responsible for any slip-ups you may have while applying your graphic so you’ll bear the burden of replacement. Sometimes this can be more costly than what we’d have charged you for the install in the first place. We ask that if your graphic winds up crooked (or worse) and you decide to leave it that way, please don’t tell anyone you got it from us and as you might suspect, graphics that we don’t apply ourselves are not warranted in any way.

Penny, we have many shops purchasing our 4oz. sizes to sell to that type customer, they don't get so many problem calls, and they make a buck at the same time.

Hi Penny, Do you ever use clear application tape on your RTA decals? The clear tape makes your graphic look fantastic and can be easier for a person with little to no installation experience.

Sara, I use clear tape on a line of small stickers I wholesale to surf shops. They are mostly small enough to be foolproof for installing, but I also sell 48" strips of flowers popular around here for decorating windshields.
My personal experience is that the clear tapes I have used can be slightly more difficult to apply then paper application tapes. So I wondered if you found a better tape then I, or if you can identify why you find them easier. I agree that they look better, which helps them sell better.

The *only* reason I dont use clear premask anymore is because it puckers and krinkles in the heat, which means jobs I install are tough to deal with and the stuff I ship out gets messed up too because it sits in a hot truck until it leaves AZ.
I used to use clear R-Tape which is a bit higher tack but like anything else, you can learn to work with it. I found it better for working compound curves because it has some stretch to it. A lot of my RTA customers would call to say "The graphics look great but I'm not thrilled with that texture over them." They thought the premask was part of the graphic, LOL!
Doug, I don't mess with premask on windshield strips anymore. I used to because it gave the vinyl some body to make working easier, but it seems to go faster if ya just line the film up (with no mask) and soak everything down really well. I guess if you're edge printing those the mask gives some protection.

I simply don't bother with instuctions or disclaimers on any vinyl that leaves my shop uninstalled by us.
If they don't know how to apply the decals then they need to hire us,If they don;t know how to remove them and the adhesive then tough pooh pooh, I didn't learn how to do these things so I can teach my customers how to do it for free.
Granted it aint rocket science, but to someone that has no clue, it is.
As soon as the vinyl leaves my door it's out of my mind, I have never had anyone even try to come back on me for graphics they applied wrong.
I dunno, I just don;t see a need for it for my shop.
I thought about stocking small bottles of rapid tac & remover but then it's just another item to inventory and track.

Our TransferRite Ultra Clear is made from a smooth film (no grid-like texture)and the adhesive is formulated to stick to the liner. It's also much clearer than first generation film tapes, so it's easier to see what you're doing from farther away, and the finished, masked result looks that much better.
I think that it's easier for a novice to work with because of his or her ability to see through it. Application to curved surfaces would be tough for a novice no matter what kind of tape they use!
You can request a sample to try through our website, www.abitape.com. Ask for product #1310 for everyday medium tack use. If you have a job with tiny letters, or if you're working with some of the calendered films, you might want to check out the high tack, #1320.

I happen to be one of those shops that stocks the 4 oz rapid tac and a equal supply of rt squeegees...
It makes things a lot simpler.. And if the customer spends enough on the graphic or whatever, or is a repeat customer, I just throw in the bottle and squeegee for free.
I sell a bottle and a squeegee for 3 bucks to anyone who purchases, and for 5 bucks to anyone who just want some..
I still make NO WARRANTY whatsoever to customer installs... unless of course I have misspelled something ( yes, it still happens on occasion, and in my post)
