You put a similar post up on Mike's site for Letterville? Just curious. (and if you did, hope you got the URL right? lol)

There is a link back here to Letterville from Mikes site.

Anything that helps people improve their skills and keep the spirit of this movement alive is welcome, wherever it comes from...in my book. [Smile]

What is that old saying about assuming? Something
about making an ass out of you and me? This sure isn't Mike Jackson's Handlettering Forum.

This is obviously a girl that shares our love for hand lettering and calligraphy, but has not yet fully developed her lettering skills or eye for design. She deserves our support. We all start somewhere.

Mike Jackson's new, updated BB is at

Hello Letterville,
I'll try to clear this up a bit!

Steve is correct, the Hand Lettering Forum is not my site. I am only the current webmaster. We have several additional moderators. The Hand Lettering Forum now has its own domain at www.handletteringforum.com which is basically just a bulletin board.

The Hand Lettering Forum is actually a subset of TheLetterheads.com. There is a link to Letterville on every page of TheLetterheads.com, along with many other BBs and sites. Both TheLetterheads.com and the HandLetteringForum.com are sponsored by the Denver Chapter of Letterheads, along with a couple of other sponsors.

The Hand Lettering Forum was originally started by Sarah Schwartz on one of the "free" BB sites. After having to change servers and BB sites several times, and especially after they started creating pop-ups after every post, the Forum was permanently moved to TheLetterheads.com to eliminate all the pop-ups. Being the webmaster there, I inherited the moderator position. Sarah Schwartz worked for a while as a calligrapher for Hallmark Cards, so the roots for that site become very apparent.

The Hand Lettering Forum has a very specific focus, as the name implies. There are plenty of sites which focus on computer signmaking, digital printing, and so forth--so there is no intent to exclude anyone--just focus on a specific task.

Recently, Mark Oatis made a very heart felt post related to his love and respect of pencil sketches and hand lettering. Follow up posts were also quite insightful. Oatis's Post

Here's a couple of paragraphs from his post:

quote:
When a slick-surfaced panel is tossed on a bench and, (following a cursory moment's hen-scratch with a grease pencil) a flooded brush dances across its surface, handlettering occurs. And sometimes, if the practitioner is a caring artist of long discipline and dedication, magic even happens.

I will have my hands full just working the balance of my career trying to become a journeyman, and to remain true to that tradition. I can always spot the real thing--there's emotion present.

There are only about 125 registered members at the Hand Lettering Forum, but they share at least some level of spirit highlighted in Mark's post. Others possessing that spirit for the old craft are welcome.

When I first saw this post, I went to the URL Billy provided. It's owned by a lady named Leda Watson. That was www.handlettering.com
It was only later that I saw the second post.

The new BB looks great Mike. Do you remember the near riot that occured when Letterville was forced to update from Matt Wright's BB program? Your rules page for posting was of special interest. Mind if I borrow a few as we rewrite the Laws Of Letterville?

Steve,
You are welcome to use any parts of our Rules and Guidelines. Bob Bond used some of it for his Pinstriping Forum. The core of rules were partially supplied by one of the Matt's Archive scripts and I just added to them over the years using similar wording from other sites.

I don't know much about php scripts, so I am having a bit of trouble knowing how to insert new links with the BB template. Yhe Rules and Guidelines are linked within the first post on the site.

We originally used the same Freeware software Steve used on this site, but after the BB filled up to about 40 pages, the software crashed and we had to move to the new php version. The php BBs are much more common around the Internet and we didn't have as much of a transition problem with readers as Steve did when he moved to this Ultimate BB software many years ago.

To follow up on Don's question...people on TheHandLettering forum often reference posts on Letterville and usually include links directly to the specific post of interest.

Best wishes to all,
Mike Jackson
