yes and while we're at it I'm interested in how users handle color management, keeping colors true from job to job and back again.

In other words if you had to replace a partial print, how do you control that the colors will remain the same. Even in media changes.

Hey Great ideas for me to ask about as I'm going to see a demo in a few weeks. Seems more and more folks are asking about larger prints than my edge puts out and of course someone must have something like it around here and is acting like walmart and giving thier prints/banners away [Roll Eyes] soooo...

I'm curious how the prints hold up outside.
I've got a tester board outside facing south so it
gets sun all day. I've got different prints laminated and unlaminated, but they've only been out since May. If I wait three years to see the results, I'll be left in the dust!!!

Well Sue Lynn that might be true but I think on this one patience may pay off, Just think about all the color camm nightmares and how the company took care of them. not good!

That machine will have to prove itself before I spend 14K on it. Not to mention if you only get 2 years unlaminated, that means on outdoor stuff laminating will need to be done requiring another machine, also requiring you to remove the print from the machine to laminate then back into the printer machine to cut. Doesnt sound like progress to me...just a way to sell cheaper prints with a lower initial cost.

BUT... time will tell and I am going to keep an open mind while others test the waters.

I don't know about the VersaCamm but I have Edge prints out that are at least three years old. Some cleared with FrogJuice, some not cleared, none with lamination.

The ones that were not cleared looked like garbage with almost all the color worn off in a little over 1 1/2 yrs. The cleared prints were better but still had significant fading after 1 1/2 - 2 yrs.

I've been wanting some form of printer for a while. I can see using them for cars or short-term & indoor signs but I have never been able to figure out how someone can sell a $3000+ sign with a digital print on it that may last 3 yrs. I know none of my customers would go for it.

Just my 2 cents! [Big Grin]

Hi Amy! [Smile]

The results you describe don't necessarily reflect poorly on the EDGE.

Do you know if those (non-clear-coated) EDGE prints were printed on EDGE READY materials using GerberColor foils? Might have made a difference.

Also worth noting that even Gerber recommend the use of Abrasion Guard (a sort of clear coat that you print) or overlaminating for certain types of applications. What sorts of jobs were they?

I had some large items printed for me 3 years ago, that shop was using a large format HP printer and HP's outdoor ink set, they also laminated the prints. It is holding up very well, much better than the resin prints from my ole Fargo or the Edge prints from my competitor, I don't know if they are using Gerber ribbons or aftermarket ones but their Edge prints are faded to white in two years.

Hi Jon, yes on the Gerber Ready Vinyl & Foils.

I don't have an Edge so can't can't vouch for much. Just thought I would point out my observations on prints I've used. I'm not sold on any digital printing completely for much more than 2-3 years except maybe true solvent.

Is it Friday yet?

As a VersaCamm owner, if I didn't have one today, I would have it tomorrow. It was easy to learn. Usually a dealer will deliver and set it up for you. I was impatient, I set it up and was printing before the dealer got here. You will need to get print profiles for different medias from Rolands website. I have printed on all kinds of media: Banners, vinyl, reflective, heat transfer material for shirts. I am mostly using Avery A6 and A8. I use some stock print profiles and turn up the heat a little. I then take it into our paint booth and spray automotive clear on the prints, when dry, I load them back into the printer and do a contour cut. It has a 'quadraline' system that sences registration markes printed on the vinyl and digitally re-aligns for cutting at a latter time - pretty awesome feature. For BIG prints I bought a liquid laminator. I'm still not sold on it so I may get a hot roll laminator later. One of my first prints was a 14' x 28" print that I stuck to dibond sign. It tracked straight as an arrow!! If anyone has any other questions please feel free to give me a call at 937-465-0595.

Karen, your original question about it sitting for a week and the heads clogging - It does it's own self cleaning so I have never had a problem.

and what do you mean sitting for a week??? Mine is running every single day, and we are just a small shop in the sticks.

Im with you Jerry I cant fault the machine and it never stops working. We have the older brother of the versacam, the soljet, and have had it for nearly 3 years and the prints are still going strong. We have had no complaints of faded color.
