Making a sign (go figure) with raised text 1" thick. Text will be HDU. The board they are going on will be about 30"x120". Should that backer board be 1/2" MDO painted or HDU. It is going flat against a building. Will possible have recessed border edge around the sign..so it would actually be 2 sheets of 1/2" MDO, one atop the other, and the letters on top of that.
I don't have a router myself, so that is why I am leaning toward the MDO. Subbing out the shape and hogging out of the MDO will get pricey. The sign is selling at around $1650.00.

Sounds like you are asking what type of substrate you should use for the background.
I assume that the background is no big thing, simply, a flat smooth surface to which your HDU letters will be attached. If that is the case then I would choose the MDO over the HDU based upon cost alone.
If this is going to be installed outside, and if you are going to use some type of screw or lag bolts to anchor it to the building, be sure to place a few washers on the bolts in back of the sign to allow for air flow.
I’m not sure what you mean about “possible recessed border edge” and “hogging out” the MDO. It sounds to me that you might want a raised border around the parameter of the sign. If that is the case, then why not cut 2 inch wide boards and attach them to the background. Cut the ends at a 45 and assemble like a frame.
Just my opinion.
