I recall when my dad died that Kent Smith posted the following...
quote:We haven't talked for a little while as he was so ill it was difficult for us both. As I sit here looking at my copy of his Love seragraph I am reminded of Al's tribute to Al Grand at the Letterheads March in Naples, FL and now I would suggest it be applied to him: Al Zanetti was a National Treasure
It appears as if Al Grand is legit...who is is and what he's actually done you'd have to ask someone like Kent.

I don't knbow anything about this award you're mentioning, but Wild Bill Betz' son and Al Grand are sure real people. Al Grand is a traditional old school window gilder that does a script that leaves me breathless for moments when I'd watch him execute it.

Al Grand is a master gilder from the Detroit area. Al always laid his leaf by hand instead of using a gilder's tip. He always wore a whote glove on the hand he used to lay gold.
Al was a comman sight at Letterhead meets in the mid to late 80's. He retired sometime around this time, but still lives in the Detroit area.
I'll let someone else fill in the blank spots, but Al would certainly qualify for this award.

Sometimes I seem not to use diplomacy but I'm a little curious as to how a Lifetime Achievment Award can be given to a person who no longer is living. I always thought that awards like this are given to living persons to show them our appreciation while they are still here to enjoy it. How come no one gave Mr.Glawson that awards 3 years back. I think an award like that should go to Lola, from what I remember as everyone spoke so highly of her, she seemed to be Ricks backbone.
posted
Unfortunately you are mis-informed. Al, my good friend is well & alive and I chose him for the award. Apparently, you must not know Lola very well, as some of us here do. You questions are valid, but at this point are unnecessary I have gone through the proper channels and as Rick was a friend, then this is the lest I can do to help remember him by.

they give that sort of thing to movie stars in their 80's
I think the idea is to honor someone after they have rounded one of the final bends in the road of lifelong achievements. While they are alive to appreciate it would be cool... but to use you for an example Joey... someone might offer you that award, & you might say... WHAT? Lifetime achievement??? YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHIN YET... Outta my way, I'll show you my Lifetime achievement when I'm done livin'!

Kevin, your reply is invalid and should have enlighted me with knowledge rather then skiming over my honest and earnest questions. I'm not here to belittle anyone or get belittled by anyone. I've also met and spoken with Rick on many occasions, of course I cannot say he was my friend but then again I don't throw words out without meanings. Rick was a good aquaintance who was very helpful and I'm sure it worked both ways when we spoke. I can assure you that my questions were earnest and whatever you feel towards a lost friend haven't anything to do with me at all.
Seems like I worked a little to hard today and posted to something I didn't quite comprehend, the Rick Glawson Lifetime Achievment Award is going to Al Grand, is that right? Well thats fantastic as He sure does deserve it and can appreciate it. Sometimes the hours take a toll of my mind and body but because I am educated and can figure things out for myself, I realized what this is all about.

yes, if lola was considered the backbone / mentor(?) of rick, then may she be in line for some kind or recognition??????
If mr. Glawson was great enough to have an award named after him would it not be good to honor so fine a lady as lola in some respectable way?

Yes, Lola is the backbone of this Award. She is the reason behind the Award. Without her, we would not be where we are today, through Rick. She was able to bring something special from Rick, and in turn, Rick brought us something special: Lola. She will be well recognized with an Award of her own. Why not come and share the joy.

I dont know what "proper channels" anyone could possibly go thru in a case like this but it seems to me that if everyone was so concerned about honroing rick and his memory just maybe they would do it just as the man lived his life....quietly taking pride and enjoyment in passing on what he knew and helping those he could even at the expense of getting stuff done for himself, instead of trying to build statues to him, naming awards after him and the like.....i talked to the man exactly 3 times, which adds up to a few hours meaning i certainly didn't know him as well as most here did or will at least claim to now.... and got the distinct impression that he would give of himself and his knowledge to anyone at any time, but sure wasnt into blowing his own horn or drawing a whole lot of attention to himself in order to do it,and i cant help but think that he might just be the least bit uncomfortable knowing his name was being used in stuff he wasn't himself involved in.

I'm suprised so many are unfamiliar with Al Grand. Like Steve said he was a regular fixture at meets in the eighties, was featured in SignCraft around that time and his work was just incredible, some of the prettiest scripts ever. One of the most touching moments I've ever witnessed was when an elderly gentleman from one of the gold leaf manufacturers was giving a seminar at a meet in Chicago and was introduced to Al Grand, whom he had dealt with for many years over the phone. The old guy was in tears.

Not to speak for CJ. However, this is the way it looks between the lines.
It seems that CJ was very close to Mr. Glawson. And he wants to be sure everything is done to build respect for his memory. And to be sure nothing is done that would harm his reputation.
Is Mr. Glawson's family aware of this award and are they included?

I posted on this thread earlier and I dont see where the couple of questions posed are so dramatically out of line or secretive that they need to be answered in pvt or over the phone instead of typing a simple and short reply here,it can't all be that secret can it? I didnt see an answer,i saw a couple of people ask questions and others get defensive and i guess answers got passed on in the backround? My question in particular had nothing to do with giving anyone a lifetime acheivement award,Al or Lola,it was an extension of my opinion on the matter...which,remember its my opinion,is that naming awards or dedicating meets to a man who you would have most probably had to force into using his name this way while he was alive is on the border of being really questionable, for one reason... because something like that depends on intentions and respect, and it seems that in this case that those intentions are in the right place and theres nothing wrong with that,i realize those involved with this meet all knew Rick for a great number of years......but it also opens the door for anyone that had the least passing association with the man to claim that they also went thru "the proper channels" and toss his name around to further their own personal agenda if people don't know exactly what criteria you choose or need to follow to keep every as*clown with 10minutes to spare from doing it for the wrong reasons. I can guarantee if that were to happen the absolute outpouring of support if someone posted they were having a "Rick Glawson Memorial Meet" would come very fast, admirations would overtake common sense and then when they found out they used his name to make money at the meet selling glawson bobble head dolls and tshirts and that promoters talked to rick once on the phone, the same post would turn into a monkey sh*t fight at the zoo in a nanosecond....then everyone, most of all those who knew the man best will be p*ssed at everyone else...then what will happen is you'll have 3 separate groups of people all giving out the same award and each p*ssing and moaning about each other and then where's the meaning of it? Just curious.

So.......You're saying. that someone can post about giving out an award, or anything else..........and I'm some kind of idiot for asking a few questions, and that I SHOULD GO MAKE A LONG DISTANCE CALL to get any answers...............I was under the false impression that letterville was a place to ask and recieve questions and answers............My Mistake.........again..............Can't get any answer.......Gotta make long distance calls.......... What's the point then............?? or is there one ??
This person is qualified enough to hold an "International Letterhead Meet'........but can't answer a couple of simple questions concerning something about his meet........on this board ??
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......!!
The second part of your post is almost as idiotic as the first........but not quite.....this place has more rumors goin around than........................
You're always welcome to come sit on our porch, and share whatever we have.................and that goes without saying....
but.......look wwhere this thread has managed to get itself, when all it would have taked was two (2) simple posts..........1 for the questions.......and 1 more for the answers.......... 24 of these posts were entirely unnessary...........
Gavin, Curtis, and a couple others hit the nail right on the head.......some of the rest seem to have the nails in their heads.........
Just a point of no interest... I have spent quite a bit of time om the phone and thru e-mail with quite a number of people..............so, I do know what's going on, That dosen't excuse the fact of it being rude for not answering simple questions.......!!
So......there are now a bunch of people out there waiting for thes same answers to these same questions, that never (or seldom) will post here (just for this very reason)
But i suppose to hell with em........they can all call if they want to know anything..........aand that comes from the horses mouth....so to speak........

I'm sorry CJ. I haven't spent a bunch of time on the phone or e-mailing back and forth with others. Instead of second hand information that is often opinion rather than fact, we just talked to Kevin. To be honest I don't know some of the answers.
That brings up some interesting questions. How much info on the details behind a meet should be for the public record? Should everyone know how much was made or lost? Who got free entrance for services rendered? Who donated what for whatever and so on? Where do we draw the line?
Let's go back and look at the original questions and see if we can provide the answers. Then we'll see if those answers differ from what you already know via the phone and e-mail. Here's the original questions...
1. Where does it come from?
2. Who hands them out?
3. What is required to receive this award?
4. Who all is involved in, and behind this?
At the risk of inflicting myself with foot and mouth, I'm going to urge Kevin to answer these questions himself. He may tell me it's none of my business! I'm not convinced it is.
In the meantime, please share what you already know about this award. I'm always curious of what the rumour mill is turning out. If your sources have already explained to you what is going on, you can answer your own questions.
Stay tuned and let's see what we can find out in the next 12 hours or so.
Can I still bounce on the trampoline?

For number One, I never expected so many demands on who I am, why am I giving an award, and so on.
Number Two, I have been here just under 1 month, whereas some have been here for awhile. I am not used to this type of exposer.
Number Three, well I don't have one.
My reason for this Award is based on my feelings for Rick and Lola. I met both at Rick's 1st Invitational Meet when I was in 8th grade, some 21 yrs. ago. Back then, I couldn't care less about going to this Gold-Leaf Meet, I was only interested in going to California to meet girl's. After arriving, I realized no girl's just more Gold-Leaf. I had already seen plenty of Gold-Leaf because my Father specialized in this field. For those who want to know, my Fathers name is Bill Betz or sometimes better known as "Wild Bill'.
At the Meet I met Rick & Lola. I could tell Rick was really involved in this gathering so I just went about playing. Lola began to talk with me and soon I found my way into conversations, expierments, and lots of Knowledge. It was Lola who guided me into this arena, making sure that I always study under my Father, always. Every time I would see or talk to her, it was the same caring advice: stop playing around and get busy being serious. Since then I have traveled to their Meets about a half dozen times. Rick was a strong mentor and Lola was my shoulder for support. I recently spoke with her about this Award and asked if she would do me the honor of being my guest for the Int. Meet, at all expense to be picked up from me. Money has a way of doing funny things with people. She thought the cost for me would quite expensive, but for me, money could never replace her kindness towards myself and my family. To hear her say I have come along way since my youth has, again, inspired me to continue my quest for Knowledge. That is why I decided to host this Meet, to try and capture as much knowledge from my Fathers peers. I would not be anywhere had it not been for Dad teaching and lOLA KICKING MY REAR TO LEARN AND DO MORE. The first time I saw Letterhead.com was 1 day after Rick passed. I couldn't believe my eye's. Then to hear how Lola was treated, and Rick's brothers dismanteling his work and collection broke my heart.
I decided it was my time to step up, host a Meet, and attempt to re-open The Detroit School of Lettering, all for the sake of knowledge. This is the task I choose to do, and here I am, trying to pay back my sincere gratitude to those that have been my friends and mentors.
As for the Award, I met Al Grand in 1983 when my Father held his 1st and only Meet. He truly is a craftsman, not only in his work, but also I believe in his life. Signs is a different world today than it was back then. I also believe the make-up of people is different. Times change and so do people. I had no intentions of holding a secret to this privilage and honor to have friends come to this Meet as a way of my-self saying Thank You to them. That is why I am hosting this Meet, so I can be confident in knowing that in my heart I am doing what I feel is right, for me, which is to pay back some 20yrs. of appreciation for the people who continue to carry on this craft we so dearly Love.
I hope I was able to convey some insight into my doings. But I must say one thing and set the record straight. I don't know anything about Ego's and I know nothing of profiting from a gathering in the name of knowledge for the purpose of $. If anyone thinks that what I am trying to accomplish is for personal gain, be it monetary or Ego, than please consider the Meet in August. I am sure that if you come, you will relize that I have a face, feelings, friends, but most of all, I just love signs. Thank You.......
Kevin Betz
P.S As for a schedule, I was going to present this on the Sat. night dinner.
