Anyone planning to attend this meet? There's not a lot of particulars here, but Letterhead Mike Meyer (meet host supreme) has coordinated this meet with the folks from Lincoln, IL. Lincoln is about 170 miles SW of Chicago on I55 and 130 miles NE of St. Louis on I55.

Thanks for the update Bill, I am currently still in Scotland and plan on hitting it hard when I return next Friday (june 11th).
There has been a glitch in my computer in Mazeppa and I am working from Stewart McLaren's in Scotland. I am now able to be on the Letterhead site. I have received a packet from the Lincoln people when I arrived there in April, but I am looking for more artwork and dimensions from them. It is probably in my mailbox or Electronic mailbox. I promise to have it buzzing as soon as possible! Any questions please Email me ASAP at stewartmclaren@hotmail.com
Lookin forward to it!
Thanks again Bill!

Mike, I emailed you Clayton's address. He is a guy that works with Ben & Joe at Prairie Signs in Bloomington and could be a great contact to have since he lives in Lincoln. Looking forward to hearing more about the meet!

How recent is the newspaper story? Seems that there was a similar situation last year between Tomahawk and FKAB meets. The international had been decided to be in Quebec, then somebody announced it later on the same weekend that it would be at Tomahawk. Only curious...just sounds like deja vu.

I'm concerned too. Whoever wrote this article has gotten his story mixed up. It needs to be corrected.
This year's Intenational Event is being held in Detroit, Michigan. I just talked to Kevin tonight and he has no idea where this story started. The most important thing we can do right now is to recommend your read The Future Live Meets Page. Every effort is made to ensure the info posted there is correct and up to date.
There's all sorts of meets happening this Summer. We'll be attending at least two ourselves, possibly three if we can find a way to pull it off. Every meet has it's own unique flavour, but there will be lots to do and learn at each. Get out there and take advantage.

To clear the air here and let people know what's going on thru my channels, I'd like to stand up and say a few words if you don't mind, Don.
I am 100% behind anyone hosting or organizing a Letterhead Meet, anywhere in the world. I sit at a computer in Scotland typing this as proof of that. I'm supporting Kevin and his meet wholeheartly, and I suggest anyone else to do the same. If you are attending, great! If not, please hold your negative comments to yourselves, OR, come out of your heckling back-of-the-room chairs and just try and run a meet yourself!!!!!
I am organizing a Wall Dog meet in Lincoln Illinois July 21-24.
Kevin Betts is having a International Meet in August in detroit.
It's that simple. I do not know where any rumors came from, and do not care. This is my story and I hope to see many people in Lincoln as well as future meets.
Thanks for your input Mayor Steve.
Don, i personnally invite you come and PAINT on some Illinois Walls and have some fun!

Dido here! I'm sorry to have turned this simple inquiry into something deeper -- that was not my intention. I apologize to Kevin and anyone involved with the Detroit International.
We in Central Illinois expect to attend the Lincoln Wall Dog, because this is our turf and a fellow letterhead has stepped in unselfishly to help a town out in our area. And he is from Minnesota. As you may or may not know, Jane and I along with other Central Illinois sign artists hosted last year's walldog event in a town only 12 miles from Lincoln. After you have hosted a meet, you are usually not interested in doing another one quite so soon, except if you are Mike Meyer. The Detroit folks and all other who have had the guts to stick their necks out, working unperceived hours, I'm sure have respect for all others hosting meets.
Now why did I forward that newspaper article? Because many sign shops in our area have requested information about the Lincoln meet. I'm sure Mike Meyer has all the support in the world, and he is certainly entitled, based on all the work he's put into meets and all the support he has given to meets. I thought I would be of help, because many area folks who have called me about the meet want to know more details. When Mike gets back to the states, I'm sure he will fill us in. But I'm one seriously busy man struttin' around in a tired 53 yr old body and if I can find a way to kill 2 birds with 1 stone I will. To help eliminate time spent on the phone, I dedided to let those interested -- know as much as I did, by copying and pasting the particulars of the event on this board. I received the e-mail article from an employee of Prairie Signs of Bloomington, IL who lives in Lincoln and offered to help Mike. My 2 younger boys work with Clayton at that sign company and its division. By no means did I copy and paste the article with reference to there being "no meet" in Detroit. I skimmed the article and didn't foresee any misinterpretation. I'm sorry to have caused any raucus. In my way I was just trying to help Mike and save time for myself.
Unfortunately we will only be able to attend 1 meet this summer and that's Mike's. Why? Because the Lincoln meet is in Central Illinois which is our home. Also much of our time recently has been spent with Jane's 87 year old mother, who -- bless her heart, has been battling to overcome a stroke. She has not been given much of a chance, but is a strong woman who has unbelievable support from her children. Other obligations for the summer for our family include the wedding of our oldest son, my wife and middle son's birthdays, a wedding of a close fiend, 4th of July, Father's Day and anyone who knows me knows I coach football and start coaching the first week of August. I'm not just a coach, but head coach and offensive coordinator for the league.
I think the article may be from an archives when the Lincoln meet was first established. At that time there were few if any particulars on the national meet in Detroit. I don't remember the chronology of it all, but that would explain the reference in the newspaper article. I remember others writing on this board and wondering if the Detroit meet was still a go.
Again I want to apologize and I as Mike and any other letterhead will tell you we support all meets and would encourage anyone in the sign and related industries to get to as many letterhead events as you can. And for those who have only been to smaller events it's time to step up and go to this year's international Detroit meet.
I wish we could go to the Detroit meet and hope in the future to be able to go to other international meets. I think when you host a meet and it comes down to crunch time, a lot of anxiety sets in. I remember hosting the international in '91 all the hours and responsiblity involved. Sometimes you need a pat on the back and now would be a good time to give Kevin and the gang over Detroit way a little praise -- it ain't easy, but as Yogi Berra said "It ain't over til the fat lady sings!" Kevin, when your meet gets rollin' and takes on a life of its own, you'll feel good about your sacrifices and you'll know what the rest of us know about hosting a international -- it was worth it!

That article had some creative writing in it when it tried to define walldog too...oh well, I have never seen a newspaper article yet that got all the facts straight.I am going to try real hard to get to this meet. Mike...I checked the trains out. In order to get from Fla to Illinois, you must travel to Washington DC, then get another train to detroit, then another to Lincoln...something like 3 days...so that's out. I may drive up, I have been wanting to go to one of these meets for a long time. Some of you may know, but my grandfather was a wallpainter, and I helped paint my first wall when I was in my early teens. My Granddad used to say if you could get it layed out by noon, then you could get it done that day.He also used to say that you could be a blind man and know who was on the scaffold with you by the way they slapped their paintbrush on the side of the can. To this day I like to slap my brush on the can and I can see myself back in my youth, standing on a plank paintin' away, and it makes me smile....
Now, does anyone have any old Harrison fitches they'd like to part with ??

When I first heard about this meet, I called Mike and asked if I could be a project leader, to reproduce a John Ohnimus design, the "Lincoln Watch" ad from Henderson's Sign Painting. Those who have the 1991 reprint of Henderson have surely seen this print; it shows a young, clean-shaven Lincoln - Lincoln as he looked as a country lawyer and congressman in Illinios. At this point I'm waiting for Mike to get back to give me dimensions, etc. on the wall, so I can finish my patterns and plan this all out. This is my first attempt at organizing a Letterhead wall job, so I'm deep into the learning curve myself.
Those who have experienced Walldog events know how special they are; the feeling of sharing our artistic talents with a community is wonderful. This is doubly meaningful to me, as Abraham Lincoln and John Ohnimus are heroes to me, each in their own way. To put an Ohnimus depiction of Lincoln on a wall in Lincoln, Illinois is something I'd never have imagined, and it's going to happen!
For those of you who can do so, come to Lincoln in July. You don't need to be told that Meyer puts on a great meet. This one will be one of the best.

Cam, it'll be interesting to see what paint technology you all will use on these projects. I know Pat King would rather use oil base. I can go either way. Belvediere and has both and so far the latex is outperforming the oil with the exception of the mural that was painted with the now defunct Deka water based paints. The mural painted with Deka has really faded badly. In Atlanta we used both.
I'm interested if there will be panel jamming, seminars or anything other than walls. Several folks have asked me about that, because they perceive walldog events as just painting walls; therefore, they have never been interested in these events. This was never the case in the past, but it needs to be clarified. The first walldog event in Allerton, Iowa had a panel jam area set up in the fire station. I striped and lettered an antique fire truck and pinstriped a couple of pickups too. Then I went out and slung some paint on a brick wall. It would be cool if Mike could get that magician "Franco" to come.

Bill, I'm an "oil man" myself, though I'm not opposed to using acrylics, given that they seem to hold up better over time. Another subject to discuss with Meyer when he gets home.
One cool thing that's happening is of a personal note. Back in 1994 I hired a young man, Alex Falk, from Philadelphia to work for me, lettering a fleet of trailers. He worked for me from June to November, then returned to Philadelphia. For several years we lost touch, until about a year ago when he posted on this BB! He lives in Chicago now, has a family, and still paints - and I have to say this. I've been around a lot of brush-slingers at Letterhead meets over the years, and I have never seen a faster, cleaner lettering hand than Alex. When he worked for me he was, at 26, better than some brush men twice his age. Judging from the photos he sent recently, he hasn't lost his touch even with his advanced age .
Anyway, I've asked Alex to come to Lincoln to work on the Ohnimus wall, and he said he would make it. I can't tell you how much I look forward to hanging out with him again.

Been watching this development, and sure, if I can get there, it will be a blast for me. Not too far from here, so that's great. Each meet we get a little more familiar with the sisters and brothers of the brush, eh? ( I know who golfs, gold leafs, guinnesses, girl watches, gives free rides in golf carts, goofs around while they paint, gets jiggy, jaggy, and gulps knives!) Finally, I broke down and bought a digital camera, desperately needed. Now to try it out a little bit! Guess someone may let me work on a wall somewhere! so many to choose from.
