I am attempting to get some software for vinyl workas I had mentioned in a previous post. I actually found a place online where you can get Corel Draw 7 discs for $5. I am assuming it will be an OEM version, no documentation.

Any comments on the useability of version 7 would be appreciated.

Current computers include a win 98 laptop and a win ME desktop. My sign computer(Win 98 )seems to have taken a vacation and I can't get it booted. I am thinking lightning may have done it in.

Cutter is a SX 15 Roland Stika. If this all works out, I hope to be able to upgrade to bigger and better software, cutter, and computer in the future. Right now I at the lower left corner of the learning curve. I am making my own signs for my escort biz, and some other misc stuff, but I want to be able to eventually either work for a shop or have my own part time biz for when there is no escort work or I decide I like staying home better than driving 400 or more miles a day.
Thanks for putting up with my newbie questions.. This place is addicting!

Bill...Corel 7/Win 98/ and your Stika will all definitely work together to allow you to cut. Not absolutely sure whether Corel 7 will work on Win ME but I suspect it will.

As a matter of interest my "cutting" computer is my laptop, and is networked to my Desktop computer when it is at home.

In your case, with a Stika and a laptop, you can be a "mobile operation" also while on the road.

I have version 7.467, called Corel Select Edition- it's supposedly version 7 with the bugs taken out. It works OK on W98 & on XP home, but cost me about $200 a few years ago when version 9 was just released.
What it doesn't do well is cut/plot nice curves on the shadows of some rounded letters.'O's and 'C's can have hexagonally shaped blocking due to some algorithm problem I'm told.

I've seen Corel 9 on the net for $9. Seems like you would want to jump ahead a little bit for a few more bucks.

Rove...Just to add to what Ian said about the flat edges on shadows. Version 9 had the same problem with it's contour feature. Here and there, on rounded lines there would be flat spots. VERY irritating. That was fixed in subsequent versions however.

Just a heads-up.
